5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
"Original recipe of 1949 from Van Vollenhoven Brewery in Amsterdam. Brewed by De Schans with special permission from Heineken. The label on the bottle is a replica of the original label. Refermented in the bottle. "
When I was in the Pilsener Club, Amsterdam, Monday 17th March, the bottle I was given was labelled Schans Stout, 6.5%. The barman told me Schans were no longer able to call it Van Vollenhovens. It tasted the same as the V V labelled bottle I remember on my last visit. I presume that Heineken have withdrawn their permission for Schans to use the name?

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pitch black body, tan head. Creamy aroma, butterscotch, macaroons, light coffee. Medium full body, pretty smooth and with a mild carbonation. Good, even fierce amount of hop bitterness over the inherit roasted malt aroma. Sticky ending. Classic feel to this beer. Good amount of flavour for the ABV. Really nice actually. (33cl bottle, cheap)

Bottle traded by Borresteijn. Thanks my friend! It pours jet black with a big creamy tan head. The aroma is heavy roasted with notes of coffee and liquorice. The flavour is very roasted with lots of liquorice notes. Coffee and bitter chocolate as well. Very good! Long bitter malty finish.

Easy going but really great stout. Just wat a stout should be. Lots of chocolate, coffee, liquorice, resins. Roasty, malty, deep. I don’t know wether this is a good tribute to the original Van Vollenhoven Stout, but it certainly is a tribute to the style.
