Bottle: Poured a deep brown cloudy color ale with a big foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with light spices. Taste is also dominated by some caramel malt notes with some spicy yeast elements also discernable. Full body with some great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad but more like a middle of the road Belgian ale slightly liking character.

App.: Hazy reddish-brown with a smallish tan head. Aroma: Strong brown sugar and molasses, some dark dried fruits, caramel, some yeast and bread, some light, cola/rootbeer herbals, a bit of wood; pretty nice aroma. Palate: Medium body, fairly full but soft effervescence. Flav.: Lots of the brown sugar and toffee, fair amounts of the dried fruits, a bit of wood, a touch of acid brightness; on swallowing, it is a bit sweet, with a touch of bitterness and some warming alcohol.

Nourishing and drinkable.

Mssive head on pouring that took a while to settle. Murky reddish brown in colour. ’Warm’ flavours on the nose; coca cola, rich malts, a touch of sugar and aniseed. Palate is quite fizzy but this carries the heavy cola and aniseed flavours well. Quiet simple really. Good enough but not enough to make me come back for seconds.

From tap at Ølbaren. Pours dark brown with a reddish hue and a lacing light brown head. Aroma is chalky, breadish, with a mild raisin note and mild mouldy. Flavour is raisins swept in bread. Dried fruity finish with a light acidity and some breadish notes lingering into the finish. Grows on me with every sip, gives the impression of a rather nice brew that doesn’t have the best of all aromas.

(Bottled, 6.5% ABV) Very dark brown with a small, tight and tanned head. Strongly rye-puddingy, raisiny aroma with grainy, sweetish maltiness. Sweetish, grainy-caramely-malty flavor with dried fruit (raisins mostly), some orange-peel, and balancing bitterness. Reminds me of St.Bernardus Abt - only with less (and completely hidden) alcohol. Medium-bodied, but slightly thin with medium carbonation. A decent Belgian Strong - although at 6.5% this probably falls into the Dubbel category.

Comments: One of Schelde’s most interesting offering: a big, round, chewy, spicy and very vinous beer with several small fruit notions (grapes, pomegranate, cherry) and balanced by a most competent dry-out effect from dynamic leafy and floral hops. Well contained alcohol.

A little bit different, each of this brewers beers are surprising in both positive and negative ways, out there as far as modern brewing goes. This was another nice drop.
Into a chalice at just on cool. Ruddy, deep, dark brown body, a little more clarity here with this one than others I’ve tasted on the list. Tight, very fine carbonation makes its way up to a nice, two-layered, top-end dense and heavy, rocky off-white head that holds and adheres well to the glass as it recedes. Treacly thick, moorish and port-like, sweet dark fruits on the nose - spiced plums, raisins and blueberries - a little gooey caramel and some cloves make for a nice wintry treat, but underneath lurks a waft of fish broth and cigarette ash that for some unknown reason does not seem out of place. Doesn’t follow onto the plate, though. Inside it is sweet up front, and level, balanced by an ensuing drier side as it moves back becoming dusty, aged, with a very sociable kick in the Jatz crackers coming from that alcohol. Thick, layered, chocolaty and velvety mouthfeel, edging woody notes hold and linger, as some note of almonds and cashews, but it is the deep, dark fruits that hold it together. Spicy and pressing. Good depth, nice long, dry musty swallow, very warming. Plum-like flavour lingers alongside the alcohol spice and woody/nutty notes. It heightens even more as it warms, comes across well in balance, broad and interesting. A nice Dubbel indeed!!! (33cL, BBE 12/07, Int’l Beer Shop, W. Leederville, tasted in October 2006)
