Hop Ruiter (Hop Rider) has a full, almost rustic malt body, and pairs Belgian yeast-driven flavors with American assertive hoppiness. It is dry hopped, with two noble varieties which add complexity, delicacy and a bit of funk.

Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy yellow-gold color with a huge soapy white head. The aroma was strong fruity and floral hops with undertones of sugar vague herbs. The flavor was tart, bitter and lemon with a grassy and herbal undertone. The finish was long and hoppy. Medium body. Decent.

Golden colour, white head. Aroma of malts and floral hops, fresh Belgian yeast, apricot, spices and grass. Flavour of fresh hops, malts, pleasantly bitter. Pleasant floral hops keynote combined with a good tripel background. Finish medium long hoppy bitterness. Refreshing summer beer, I quite like it.

In a shameless act of self promotion, I, Wendy Littlefield, the importer, am posting my rating of our hoppy strong golden ale. I would have given it a 5 - but there is always room for improvement. I am posting the review by Lew Bryson that is in the current issue of All About Beer. His remarks appear below. To the reviewer who asks about the name,Hop Ruiter, it means "hop rider". When we were creating the label for the product (my husband Don Feinberg’s invention) we were inspired by the landscape & local history of this part of belgium that hugs the Dutch border. The fens and heaths north of Turnhout were favorite hunting grounds for the medieval Dukes of Burgundy whose coat of arms emblazon the label. Their love of art, industry and living well imbue life in the Kempen region to this day. The small city of Turnhout is the world HQ to the playing card industry, and home to a talented crew of renegade brewers who brew this beer (the Schelde Brewery). We partnered with them to create a strong golden ale that combines Belgian finesse with American love of assertive hops. We simultaneously launched Hop Ruiter in Holland, Belgium, Italy, Japan and the USA. We think these brewers have a tremendous amount of talent and want to help them succeed by bringing our 30th years of experience as Belgian beer importers and craft brewers (we founded Brewery Ommegang) to assignment. Hope you enjoy and that, whatever you think, you will let us know. For more info on the beer, check out www.belgianexperts.com. Here’s Lew’s take on the beer. “Beautiful pour, beautiful head! brilliant white mousse over a gauzily golden body. Very intoxicating to look at it. Candy, sweet clove, zinging spiciness: This is the smell that drew me to Belgian beer thirty years ago. And it tastes…just like that, only with a twist of bitter at the end that spins this all into another paradigm. Is it overhopped? No. Is it soppy-sweet? No. Am I going to drink the rest of it? You damn betcha. Lew Bryson

Bottle - 750mL crowned. Golden amber with a tall, fluffy eggshell white head. Aroma is floral hops dispersed amongst dusty yeast notes, dried fruit, tropical fruit notes, sweet malt and grassy hints. Taste is surprisingly sweet but while retaining a pleasant bitterness and yeasty funk. Soft earthiness, dusty yeast, dried fruit, light spice, grassy and floral hops, and malt notes. Body is medium with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more yeast and grassy hops, lighter floral notes, fruit, sweet malt, light spice, and sponge cake.

Tap @ Moeder Lambic Fontainas, Brussels.
Pours hazy to muddy pale yellow with a small, frothy, white head. Nice lacings. Aroma has grass, pine, crisp and light doughy malts. Low carbonation, dry and fairly creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has yeast, dryness, pine and doughy malts. Bone dry finish. Too much unbalanced yeastiness.

750ml bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head that quickly exits. The aroma is bread, hops, and wet hay. Taste is sweet and a bit metallic, with a dry hop finish for a Trippel. Body is medium with average carbonation. Overall, the Trippel is not my favorite Belgian style, often too sweet for me. This one is not too sweet, but is underwhelming. OK, but probably would not buy it again.

Bottle. Hazy yellow pour, white head. Sweet malt, candi sugar, yeast, light notes of fruit, and spicy hops. Decent, but too sweet for my taste.

Better than the rating suggests. Tastes like asian food, shi-takii, umamu etc. Light, deceptive. On tap at cafe hesp
