The beer is made from no less than four varieties of malt, amongst which amber and caramel malts and two varieties of hops, with a spicy touch of Koriander and rounded off by genuine dark sugar candy for refermentation. Dark ruby in color, it is a strong barley wine.

Typical ’massive ale’ already made by the Scheldebrouwerij when they were still in the Netherlands and referring to an old brewing tradition from Bergen-op-Zoom close to the Belgian border. Thick, yellowish white, firm head over a very dark burgundy, cloudy beer. Aroma rich maltiness, dates, orange, chocolate, port wine, caramel and liquorice but above all a lot of coriander. Full malty, sweet and chocolatey taste, candied fruits, apple, soft with tingling carbonation, orange touch, strong drying coriander, finish a bit sticky, florally hopped and warming but not astringent alcohol. Well-balanced.

Bottle at home best before june 2010. Hazy dark amber to brown pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma is cardboard with spices, red wine, dust and old malts. Flavor is slightly sweet, quite malty with nuts, caramel and toffee, dusty and a little old. Gets better after a few sips. Low carbonation and a creamy texture. Not really my cup of tea.

Dark brown coloured beer with a small off-white head and medium carbonation. Roasted caramel malty aroma with a strong herby (Jenever berry) alcoholic touch. Full creamy palate. Finish is strong alcoholic and malty touched. Very strong, creamy but enjoyable.

Bottle, RBESG, August 2005. Reddish, dark brown colour. rather too prickly and fizzy on the tongue. Lots of toffee, treacle and chocolate. Some fruity notes on the palate (prunes). I was going to say it didn’t seem like a barley wine but, despite the commercial description, we don’t have it listed as one anyway. Nothing special.

1st October 2008. Cloudy dark brown beer. Chocolatey malt with a slightly sour undertone - almost like an aged scotch ale. There is a subtle creamy sweetness in the mid followed by a sharp effervescent sting in the finish. All hangs together well. Tasty and complex.
