3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: SEP 2, 2007 Recommended by the good men of Utobeer. Bought on the promise that it was not brewed with oysters. Opaque chocolate colour with beige head. Dove my nose in for a good whiff and didn’t want to leave. Intoxicating aroma of chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Yum, dessert! Strong taste of coffee and molasses with a sticky syrup texture to match. Charred oak and vanilla finish. A belly warmer. Not for everyday, but a good beer indeed.

A Mes rate:
Bottle from the wonderful Utobeer stall at borough Market. As far as I can remember this is my first rate of a Dutch stout. Damn fine stuff it is too!. The nose tells you it means business right from the off. Delicious layers of fruit, vanilla and caramelised sugar flow over the side of the Grottenbier glass I have poured it into. Just the right amount of alcohol showing through too. I found it a little soapy at first but now it has settled it is glorious. JUST how I like it. Sim has only just pointed out (3rd of the glass gone) that this is oyster stout! How silly of me!. No detection of seafood there at all. Anyway, body as black as night topped with just a thin blanket of dense stouty head. Flavour is orange, sweet with lots of malt and lashings of alcohol (that is just about completely tolerable) a dash of spice and that aged oaky timbre. The more I drink the more I realise the alcohol is just verging on the standing out too much and burns if only just a little on the way down. It just takes the edge of what should be a full bodied, well balanced gem but make no mistake I am really enjoying this. Not particularly stout like if you ask me but who cares when it is this good. It has an unusual fizzy palate that turns totally smooth the moment you swallow and it only enhances the experience. The finish once more lets it down just a tad being slightly on the sticky side. There are two things wrong with this beer, otherwise it’s a little belter. Best try of a new beer for me in a long time. Oh in addition, it has really done the trick. I am clearly on my way after one bottle. Must be the oysters.

Really great stout with a chocolate-fruit flavor, a very dark brown color to it and smooth, mellow buzz.

Thanks a lot John - you rock! What a nice brew! Dark bron color, nearly black with a small, fast diminishing head on top. Intense coffee, bandaid, molasses and chocolate nose. Very nice. Nice chocolate taste - some slight coffee with a good balanced salty finish. Medium bitterness. Fizzy carbonation.

Big bitter chocolate nose, charred wood aromas too. Dark brown color and a fizzy foamy head. Full roaste malt tastes with chocolate, licorice and a coffee bitter end. Thin and quick, but good tastes and a good balance.
