COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

The beer is light orange colored and fairly hazy. The white head is a finger thick, displays decent retention, and leaves some sparse lacing on the pint glass. The aroma offers fruit, wheat, malt, light hops. The flavor is decent. The beer is slightly sweet, with malt and fruit flavors. The body is pretty thin, with solid carbonation. Overall, a decent brew. I would try it again. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-06-2011

A little past its prime but the hops still do come through. Reminds of a german export style.

Poured an amber/gold color with a nice frothy head that faded slowly to lacing. Aroma was nice - bready, sweet malt, fruity. Taste was pretty decent as well - hoppy (high to moderate), nutty malt backbone. Palate was above average too. Overall, a nice Vienna lager in the vein of Sam Adams.

jebert (405) - Watertown, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Pours a copper gold into the glass with a nice head of pearl colored foam. Nose is mostly malt. Creamy on the palate, the taste is light hops on the front end, light malt and bread in the middle and a hop kicker on the finish. Overall, a pleasant sipping beer that pairs well with summer picnic food.

Bottled. Poured clear, medium orange with a short, sticky off-white head.. nice lacing followed it down. The aroma picked up sweet caramel and redder fruity notes with fresh pine resin and grassy accents.. really, really clean. The flavor found sweet, lightly-toasted caramel at the core, with fresh, prickly pine and leafy bitterness throughout.. refreshing, lingering bitterness and simple, but tasty malts on the finish. Lighter-bodied with moderate-plus carbonation on the palate.. good flow to it.

This one is even worse than their Pils, though along the same lines. Added some flavor complexities? They sure have, just the wrong ones. Its only saving grace is that it is seasonal so that we do not have to dump it out year round.

starts with minimal, nearly undetectable flavor, followed by a strange unpleasant bitterness. not hoppy, just an artificial seeming bitterness. i don’t know what they were going for, but this certainly can’t be it. one of the worst beers i’ve ever had.

Bottle in hotel room, picked up at a Hy-Vee in Lincoln, NE. Clear, dark gold appearance with an off white head. Sweet creamy, grainy, light citrus, hay aroma. Easy drinking, sweet grassy, lightly herbal, straw flavor. Easy drinking and pretty nice.

Bottle poured a clear amber with a lingering ring of ivory foam. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, light carmel and light citrus. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of biscuit, earthiness, light grapefruit and light pine with a crisp moderatrly bitter finish.

Clear light amber pour with moderate foamy off-white head. Nose is light citrus and some bready malt with light caramel. Biscuit and caramel flavor with some faint citrus. Lightly bitter finish. Quite nice overall.
