COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

Pours orange-gold with white foamy head. Strong and pleasant malty aroma. Hops up-front, bready/biscuit malt brings up the rear. Dry aftertaste. Well balanced and a good representative of the style. I rather like Vienna’s and this is a good one.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2010 Bottle. A - Lighter, crisp tawny color with an average sized, tight foamy, sticky, fluffy, slightly off-white head. Very nice retention with a nice layer of lace left. S - Bready and grainy malt are strong. Nice hint of citrus hops and a slight sweetish lemony citrus as well. Spicy aroma and a hint of herbal aroma. T - Similar to the nose with a good bready backbone. Very strong hop presence for the style. Leafy herbal hops along with a strong citrusy hop flavor. Spicy and lemony flavors. Touches of caramel malt. Quite bitter hoppiness on top of a typical lager type taste. M - Light body with average carbonation. Crisp feel. D - Pretty easy drinking for this beer. The hoppy kick doesn’t weigh too much on the palate and it is pretty crisp and refreshing. Notes: Not too bad. Plenty of hoppiness. Nice, crisp, refreshing beer that was easy to drink, but it didn’t really impress me that much. I would get it again, but not one I will regularly get.

Pours a darker shade of golden with a medium, fluffy, off-white head. Aroma is of yeast, malts, and some grassy hops. Tastes quite yeasty with a heavy malt presence and some earthy, citrus hops. Thin body with medium carbonation and a lightly bitter hop finish.

pours an amber color with a good off white fluffy head. aroma is toasted malt and a nice piney light citrusy hop aroma. flavor has the same elements but a bit stronger. this is a vienna?! kind of a blend of an apa, vienna, and bitter. i like it though a nice anniversary beer for them.

Bottle. Pours deep amber with medium off-white head, delicate lacing. Aroma jumps right out, bright leafy pine and floral hop scent, subtle citrus notes. Flavor and palate are outstanding. Round, nicely textured malt. A cleanness noticeable from the lager yeast, fresh cookie dough malt flavor, very mild spice, lingering bitterness and piney resin. A world-class lager that could probably compete with some of the best of germany and czech, very nicely balanced, too, not over the top with american hop flavors.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2011 12 oz. bottle from TC Craft. Dark golden color, big white foamy head. Fresh hoppy aroma with notes of pine. Flavor is a nice balance of the malt with a hoppy bite. Excellent beer, one of my new favorites.

Deep golden color with a creamy off white head. Mild hoppy aroma with a hint of pine. Overall dry flavor of mixed hops but still a rather malty brew. A very good american style pale ale.

Pours copper with a billowy beige head. Aromas of hops, bread. Very smooth, crisp, great carbonation, hoppy finish. Rich flavor. Slight warming builds on the tongue as you drink it. Really nice beer.

jebert (407) - Watertown, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Pours a copper gold into the glass with a nice head of pearl colored foam. Nose is mostly malt. Creamy on the palate, the taste is light hops on the front end, light malt and bread in the middle and a hop kicker on the finish. Overall, a pleasant sipping beer that pairs well with summer picnic food.

Bottle shared by akevitt. Pours a clear amber-gold body with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, bread, yeast, and some nice floral hops. Flavor is not as intense as the aroma, but similar with the hops more prominent. Body is on the lighter side of medium, but very drinkable. Slick mouthfeel and well carbonated. Finishes dry and bitter with a slight aspirin taste.
