COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

A feathery aroma, but what I do detect, is a little bit of herbal hops, sweet malts, and grass. Flavors of toffee, sweet bread, grains, and hops. Mild, fruity and crisp finish. Easy to drink. At first this is kind of boring but it does grow on a person mid bottle.

Pours a cloudy dark gold/amber with a teafroth off-white head. Nose of light fruit, caramel, honey, toast, and bread dough. Flavor is nice and bitter, with caramel, dough, and lemon. Very dry finish.

Bottle from sampler pack. Very decent beer, if a little of the mish-mash one would think from the description. Has the body of a malty beer with the hoppy flavor and especially finish of an IPA. Not the best but still a very good beer.

Poured an amber/gold color with a nice frothy head that faded slowly to lacing. Aroma was nice - bready, sweet malt, fruity. Taste was pretty decent as well - hoppy (high to moderate), nutty malt backbone. Palate was above average too. Overall, a nice Vienna lager in the vein of Sam Adams.

on tap at ground round in winona, mn. scent is rather mild but does consist of some hops and a yeasty malt. taste has nice hops notes. there is also a slight carmel hint in the end. nice smooth finish. not a bad brew.

Pours a lot of head and champagne like bubbles. Way too hoppy for me, won’t ever buy this one again.

Deep amber body. Nice floral hop aroma with a light alcohol smell. Less bitter than expected, pepper taste hides under the bitterness. Lighter body with fine carbonation.

Golden brown pour with a very small white head. Hoppy, spicy nose, smells a lot like a pale ale. Hops make up most of the taste in this beer, it is also quite citrusy, but not fruity? Medium body with a crisp finish. I don’t know if is my spring fever or the beer’s pale ale qualities, but I really enjoyed this beer.

The Hopfenmalz is an reddish-orange beer with moderate head. The aroma is, sure enough, very hoppy, and the hops have both floral and citrus hints. The taste is very balanced (but I don’t notice any sweetness). The palate has good texture but a slightly bitter finish. Nonetheless, this is a good, good, solidly good beer from Schell, and one that I’ll be keeping my eye out for.

A really delightful beer. With a lighter body that is a nod to the light Lagers that helped them survive for many decades, and a high quality malt flavor and bright citrusy hops that are a nod to the craft brews that sustain them today. Kind of an American hopped Dortmunder? Very drinkable.
