COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

A pretty good hop balanced lager. Does have the lager crispness with hop flavor from this German style brewer. Not too bitter for the lager minded, and just enough hops (for a lager) for a hophead like myself. But overall i wouldn’t go out of my way to get it.

Pours orange-gold with white foamy head. Strong and pleasant malty aroma. Hops up-front, bready/biscuit malt brings up the rear. Dry aftertaste. Well balanced and a good representative of the style. I rather like Vienna’s and this is a good one.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Light to moderate sweet balanced aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a moderate bittersweet finish of average duration. Goes well with spicy food.

Poured a nice amber color, with not much of a head on it. Had a rather light taste and very drinkable.

Pour on tap at Winterfest 2012, hazy orange with white head, aroma has notes of nice pine and citrusy hops, touch of biscuit as well, but otherwise a bit indescript. Taste is a nice mix of biscuit, toffee, some nice citrus notes, finishing fairly dry and bitter. Pretty nice.

Pours a copper gold into the glass with a nice head of pearl colored foam. Nose is mostly malt. Creamy on the palate, the taste is light hops on the front end, light malt and bread in the middle and a hop kicker on the finish. Overall, a pleasant sipping beer that pairs well with summer picnic food.

Sampled at the 2010 Crescent Moon Extreme Beer Festival. Pours clear light amber with a thin white head. Mild toffee aroma. Thin in body. Has a good medium bitter taste. The mild hop finish lingers. Not bad.

A feathery aroma, but what I do detect, is a little bit of herbal hops, sweet malts, and grass. Flavors of toffee, sweet bread, grains, and hops. Mild, fruity and crisp finish. Easy to drink. At first this is kind of boring but it does grow on a person mid bottle.

This is the 150th Anniversary brew. That’s an old brewery. I’m sure lots of changes have occurred since 1860. Taste is ok, nothing amazing. Just ok. Would have liked a traditional beer brewed with an original recipe from 1860.
