COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schell Anniversary Draft Series #5, featuring Hopfenmalz. It is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkablity of a Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we agressively hopped it with Cascade and Tettnang from the Pacific Northwest. Finally, just to ensure we used enough hops, we dry hopped it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with one of our old world lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities. Finally, we aged it for six weeks to provide the crispness that is only found in a lager. Prost!

12 oz bottle from a Schellís sampler 12-pack. Label (from late 2011) does not mention anniversary. Pours a clear amber with a fluffy white head and moderate lacing. Nose has some ctirusy hops. A good balance of bready malts and hops. Fairly bitter taste with a hint of pine but nothing nasty afterwards. Nothing outrageous, but refreshing and well crafted. Not one of my favorite styles, but worth a try or three.

33 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA. Rich copper colour, foamy pond scum head. Strong citrus aroma with warming clove backbone. Hops overpower the malt, I was looking forward to a bit more malt profile but this is decent nonetheless.

12 oz. bottle as an extra in a trade with fidelis83- thanks again, Jeremiah! Pours a mostly clear amber with a big off-white head that leaves some light and sloppy lacing in the glass. Aroma of toast, grass, citrus, tea, banana, cardboard, and musk. Flavor of wet leaves, cardboard, grass, tea, citrus, floral hops, caramel malts, and rainwater. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a wet, leafy mouthfeel. Not bad, but this one just isnít doing it for me. Though I have to admit I dig the grandpa beer-style label.

Clear amber with a medium tan topper and a swatch of lace. Aroma of pale and bready malts, citrus, mild noble hops. Taste of spicy hops and pale malt with some citrus and floral qualities. A bit on the sudsier side and notes of bitterness on the back end.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 Tap. Light gold pour with a moderate white head. Aroma is scotch ale and vinegar. Nice medium body in a lighter beer. Taste is hop, malt, and an aspirin-like finish. Decent.

This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.

MrBunn (2456) - The Wet Side of a Dry Town, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 7, 2010
Bottle. Pours a darkish gold with a thin yet dense head and aromas of pale malt, herbal hops and a bit of apple. Flavor starts alright enough, but then a bit of a metallic bite takes over, spiraling the whole thing into a herbal/metallic/medicinal tailspin. It seems to recover just a bit as it sits/breathes/warms, but itís a little rough around the edges.

aroma was a zesty hop malt aroma but this penny aroma starts to come through, thought it might be my glass but the remaining beer in the bottle smelled the same. Taste was a balance of sweeter malts and grainy hops, finishes with that tinny flavor, not awful, but not good enough to be a 150 Anniversary

Poured from 12oz bottle, pours a clear light amber with a decent head and some lacing, the aroma is of some sweet malt and bread mixed in with metal, the flavor is sweet but has a metallic finish, decent brew just nothing special.
