COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Do you love Dunkleweizen? How about rye beers? If the answer is “yes,” you’re going to want to get your hands on Schell’s Anniversary Series #7- Roggenbier. Roggenbiers are a German specialty beer originally brewed in Regensberg, Bavaria. They were quite popular at one time; these days, however, they are very rare. Schell Roggenbier is fermented with Schell’s very special Hefe yeast. The flavor profile is reminiscent of cloves, bananas, vanilla, a dash of chocolate, and the spicyness of malted rye. The release for Schell Roggenbier is commemorating the birthday of Al Marti, President of August Schell Brewing from 1934-1969. This is the Schell’s Anniversary Draft Series #7 beer.

Sampled at the 2009 Great Nebraska Beer Festival. Rye and wheat? what’s not to like? Pours a cloudy light brown with a thin off-white head. The beer has great flavor of rye. It is yeasty and doughy but the body is on the light side. It finishes quietly.

I had one of these at Buster’s on 28th. The description says it all. The nice mellow smoothness of rye added to a beautiful Dunkelweizen. Excellent. I wish I could get more of this.

Hmm, had one of these last night here and the yeast was overpowering. Must have settled out a bit because today it’s way better. Pretty much as described by the brewery. Served with a nice, large, foamy and frothy off-white head and plenty of lace. Color is a very cloudy brown with amber highlights. Aroma is rye-fruity Bavarian hefe-weisse. Flavor is like a Bavarian hefeweizen as well, but with the fruitiness of the rye. Still picking up a bit of the yeast, but it’s not so bad now, decent even. Hahahaha maybe healthy. Good carbonation and mouth-feel. Pleasant finish. Session beer.

On Draught at El Bait Shop! This was pretty gosh darned nice, so were the Reps from Schell who kept my pint full until I left the bar! Schell Employees rock! As does this beer, The beer pours an insanely cloudy brownish amber color with a nice head and plenty of lace. Aroma is spicy and floral with some bubblegum and some clove. The flavor was wonderful with a nice banana, plenty of caramel but this is balanced by a nice spiciness and a great zing from the rye, fruity but with just a different layer of fruitiness in comparison to most dunkelweis.

On draught at the Happy Gnome in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a semi-hazy dark caramel amber colored brew with a creamy off-white head that has some excellent retention and lacing. Aroma of banana esters, dried dark pitted fruits, a touch of apple, caramel and brown sugar. Taste is medium to full bodied, smooth as silk, with flavors of a typical dunkelweizen with a touch of dry fruit. Finish has a smooth and velvety texture with a caramel/chocolate and banana aftertaste that is well balanced and no bitterness.
