Commercial Description:
In honoring Otto Schell, the second president of Schell’s (1902-1911), comes the third beer of the Schell’s 150th Anniversary Draft Beer Series. Dampfbiers came from southern Bavaria during the late eighteenth century, when the Bavarian Forest was was one of the poorest regions in Bavaria. Wheat was too valuable to be wasted on beer brewing, and the hops of the nearby Hallertau region were too expensive to purchase. So brewers developed an all barley beer, but didn’t have the temperature control to produce lagers. With ales being a rarity in Germany, it required the brewer to travel to the nearest Weissbier brewery and scrounge some yeast to brew their Dampfbier.

Very neat! Can’t imagine I’ll ever have the chance to savor another brand of this style. Poured with an off-white head that dissipates somewhat. Some lace. Clear medium dark amber color. Yeasty, malty, spicy aroma. Great barley malt/ bavarian weiss yeast flavor. Perfect carbonation. Fresh finish. Session beer. Clean. Masterfullly done. Great beer.

Autumn Brew Review 2008
This beer had a unique flavor which was also enjoyable. Noticed were vanilla, iced tea, honey, as well as banana. Nice thirst quencher on an old style.

Tap at Sterbs, as BDR calls it. I like this but it is not as rustic as the description leads one to believe. I thought it was a lager while drinking it. The palate is light, but seems appropriate for the style. Light red color and it does look filtered. The aroma is unmistakably that of a wheat beer with yeast, banana, and clove. Flavor is just a little sweet, again more wheat and I thought this was some kind of wheat beer because it definitely has those characteristics. Lightly roasted, some candy sugar. I like it, and its great that Schell’s tries things like this.

On draught at Stub & Herb’s in Minneapolis, MN. Pours a semi-clear light copper amber brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that dissipates clean with no thin head or ring. Aroma of lightly sweet caramel malt, banana esters, a touch of marshmallow, and some cloves. Taste is light to medium bodied, very little carbonation with a semi-sweet caramel malt, banana and clove flavor with a touch of pepper. Finish is semi-sweet, a little flat with a light Hawaiian bead aftertaste that quickly disappears.

Draft at Stub & Herb’s. Pours a clear, amber body with a reddish hue. Thin, white head. Light aroma of grain and malts with a hint of caramel. Flavor is interesting - it starts out with straightforward malt and grain flavors and then near the finish you get a burst of sweetness of caramel, banana, and a bit of citrus. Clean aftertaste.

On tap at Madcapper in Stillwater. Copper color with a thin head. Sweet grain aroma, lightly bready. A light caramel grain start to the flavor, followed up with sweet grains and bread. A little floral hop and a faint bit of banana. Interesting to say the least.
