4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Not often does somethign like this get my juices flowing. I love lagers but mid-sized american breweries usually fuck them up. This is something different. I was expecting crap. I was surprised. It isnít a traditional lager though, more like an ipa-light. Very different than the standard shit coming out.

Spicy and good! Better than I expected...standard Schell yeast, but the rye matched it well.

Tried this today at pub 500 in Mankato as Schells is not releasing to Mankato liquor stores til next week and then in limited suppy. Beer was tap variety. Served with 1" head. Pleasant aroma of Emerald hops with deep reddish hue. Beer drinks crisp with mildly bitter aftertaste from the hops. Overall a pleasant great tasting beer.

3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Appearance - Crystal clean beer, reddish as expected and very refreshing looking. On draft and served with a one finger head that dropped quickly with little lacing.
Aroma - slight noble hop aroma from the use of the German hop variety, accompanied by a toasty malt aroma that comes up from the rye.
Taste - very clean yet bold first impression. Elegant flavor with a unique rye oiliness that does not overpower the beer. Very layered flavor, with that dry, lager finish that you expect from Schells.
Overall - a very pleasant and enjoyable beer. A lot of simple (meant in a good way) flavored come at you but with the crispness of a lager. Well worth trying. Canít wait to have some with steak.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 3, 2012 Pour is kind of a ruby/copper,thick dense short head, leaving some creamy froth upon settleing.
Pretty hoppy nose, reminds me of some SN stuff. Intense grassy/pine herbal aroma with spice and some malt in the background.
Taste is smooth almost slick, pretty hoppy and piney, nice malt backbone with light toffee, carmalized notes with malt, spice .Strong piney bittering with some spice and dryness.Very piney, very vbitter-maybe a bit too much though, crisp dry finish. Seems built like a good rye ipa.Glad to have a full sixer of this

Pours dark copper with small off white head. Aroma is spicy rye citrus hops. Lots of spicy rye up front, little bit of piney hops and some citrus on the back end, even a little tropical fruit from the hops. Pretty good stuff, definitely a pleasant surprise.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle. Amber-orange body, filtered. Creamy, steady off-white head. Sweetish malt aroma, not bad. Medium bodied, pretty easy going macro Rye beer. A pretty enjoyable hoppy Lager, something you donít get too much, and even if Schell doesnít really nail it with quality ingredients, they can brew well enough to execute something like this. Smooth caramel, rye malts malt, steady respectable hop bitterness, well balanced.

Pours a beautiful amber with a thick crown of tan foam. Nose is of malt. Nice and creamy on the palate, the taste is very well balanced between its malt backbone and its hop accents with very little bitterness. This flavorful beer is a good companion to a variety of soups and sandwiches.

Loose bottle at HyVee. Interesting light brown color, kicks up a big foamy head, but maybe my glass had some dust in it. Smell is low on malts, with just a hint of spice, and the hops seem subdued so far. Tasting, though, really offers a hit on my tongue. First I think itís from having a lot of rye, but it seems most of this is from the hop. Bitterness is more from pungency, or like holding a wet hop cone in oneís teeth. Acidic, and maybe not ideal for most beer drinkers. But for hop lovers who want to try a different hop, this is an eye-opener. Malt leaves a lot of stickiness on my lips. Hop at finish offers a sprig of mint.

Copper with a light patina color. Taller, aged paper colored head with nice lace. Big fresh hops aromas, pure Spire B scents. Underneath lies some spicy rye hints. Initial sweet and spice hit the palate. Hints of licorice and pine. Slick light oily feel. Finishes with the rye bread and hit of herbal hops. This is one of those brews that makes me think. I like the components, but there are times I think they work and others Iím not so sure. I could definitely sit by a fire and have a few of these and try to sort out my thoughts. 8/12
