COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
After occupying Berlin in 1809, Napoleon’s troops adoringly referred to the tart and effervescent white beer of the city as “The Champagne of the North.” In honor of this beer style, its history, and Minnesota’s great state motto, Schell’s crafted “Star of the North,” their interpretation of a traditional Berliner Weisse. They used an authentic mixed culture of yeasts and bacteria from Berlin for fermentation and aged it in one of their original cypress wood lagering tanks from 1936. The long secondary fermentation in the wooden tank allowed the defining characteristics of the beer to develop. It was then hand-filled, hand-labeled and bottle-conditioned, which allows it to continue to develop and evolve. This beer will be available in select liquor stores later this week. Enjoy it straight in a pokal glass or mix in a shot of sweet raspberry or woodruff syrup, as is traditionally done in Berlin.

This beer is extremely pale yellow in color with a slight haze and a large, creamy, snow-white foam head. This beer is rather light on the palate and very dry. A lively carbonation accentuates the refreshingly tart acidity. Expect an interesting mix of fruity flavors reminiscent of ripe lemons and apple juice with a touch of spice and a subtle brett character.

Bottle thanks to Bacterial. Hazy gold pour with white head. Wheat, lightly tart, bread, fruit. Notably missing the vomit, making this a nice introduction for my family, with whom I am sharing this. Lightly sweet, dry finish, just the slightest tartness -- family all comments it’s like champagne, and I agree. Light body, lively carbonation. Nice beer.

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a billowing head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of sour wheat, lemon, and mild funk. Taste follows, tart and citrusy with a slightly funky finish. Very simple but that’s what makes it so good!!

I open this bottle in celebration of becoming a top five August Schell Brewing rater!
Pours a very pale hazy yellow with a big head that rises and falls fairly quickly but the steady stream of tiny effervescent bubbles quickly rising up the glass is something to behold.

The aroma is complex it has the wheaty and yogurty aspects of a Berliner Weisse, but it’s got some rich funk, some citrus peel, & some apple to it. It’s pungent and has a very nice bouquet.

The flavor has a lemony sourness and is very tart all around. It hints at some fruity apple like sweetness, but is dominantly dry. The woodiness is subdued but very pleasant it’s got a nice fruity apple & tart citrus character. It’s bright but funky, enjoyable through and through.

Bottle from Hopscotch, (mucho ty ’cause I would have never ever bought this on my own)... Corked bottle pouring a straw pissy golden hue with a lasting fizzy head in my Berliner Weisse bowl. Well just on principle I had low expectations of this considering the brewery. Nicely tart (green apple and meyer lemon) but not overpowering, lightly funky and husky with a dry woody finish. Sprite über refreshing palate fitting of the genre.

Damn, the world is off it axis. I really like this and easily the best beer I ever had from Schell.

Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle poured into glass. Tart aroma, medium body, well carbonated, and little lacing. Taste is tart, acidic, and lemon. Really good berliner would like to have this again.

Thanks Jace! Nice light straw with diaphanous character and fluffy, short lived white cap. Smells nice and balanced with funk and sharpness from grain, lacto and seemingly a touch of brett. Nice tart flavor with lemons, clay, apple (underripened) and a little acetic note. Thin bodied with appropriately upper end carb and a solidly dry finish. Nice beer.

Bottle at Exira Beer Summit IV. Thanks to bnielsen13 for bringing. Pours a hazy yellow color with white head. Wheat, lemon, slight tart aromas. Sweet, lemon, spritzy, slightly tangy flavors. Very drinkable. Worth trying, but I don’t know if it’s worth $14.
