surprising hop bite to this one...but after all the other malty beers from schell one has to wonder if the hoppiness is relative to all the malts???? either way..itís nice

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice beer with well rounded bitters to make a pleasant and different experience than other Pale Ales. Good crisp and complex aroma.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Light amber color with a light malt colored head that disipates quite quickly. Some malt and noble hops aroma. Kind of a cross between an alt and a kolsh. Nice malt flavors along with a bit on light fruitiness. Finishes quite dry and a bit acidic.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2006 Update August 2006: I still like this beer--but Iíve had to drop it down a notch in comparison with some other PAs out there (most notably Millstreamís Warsh Pail Ale and Daleís Pale Ale). Donít get me wrong, Schellís PA is still a very good brew with a nice mix of maltiness & hoppy bitterness--plus itís a great buy at $5.99/six pack.
Tried another batch of this brew for old time"s sake. NOTE: the label has changed & the word íGermaní has been removed; it"s now simply Schell Pale Ale. Whatever it"s called, this is a major league good beer. I sensed more bitterness this time around--a positive attribute in my book. I don"t think I"ll ever grow tired of this brew.
I"m such a novice that I don"t have a clue about the differences between an American Pale Ale and a German one...however, I do know that the Schell"s Pale Ale is pretty darned tasty. I didn"t find it particularly bitter but the flavor seemed nicely balanced to me. The darkish amber color looked nice in my ale glass. I"ll be getting this stuff again...

Wow. As bitter as promised. Didnít have much of an aroma. A nice thick beer. Not something Iíll be drinking daily, but I will be drinking it again.

Itís on the malty side, but itís surprisingly smooth -- I didnít find it bitter at all.

Thereís actually some substantial hop action to this one, unusual in a Schell product, but I think that it confuses, rather than balances the decent malt. What it really reminds me of is a British pale, rather than an alt - at least the darker alts I live for (Arbor Brewingís and Schellís own Schmaltz). Anyway itís unusually complex coming from Schellís stable of strong simple malty brews, with strange (interesting?) cidery and fungal notes.
