CaptainCougar (4663), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 26, 2006 Pours a very dark practically opaque with a short-lived tan head that subsides into a thin ring. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and milk chocolate with some German bready yeasty character and noble hops. Body starts with a full, heavily carbonated caramel malty sweetness turning more bitter and dry toward the mildly earthy bittersweet finish. Fairly true to style and a nice altbier. muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 8, 2007 12 oz bottle from Woodmans on Gammon Road, Madison WI (August 2006) imbibed from a Zwiec lager glass at cellar temperature. Pours out with a huge, fluffy light taupe head topping the dark maple-brown clear body and lacing nicely.....caramel and light herbs in a somewhat mild aroma, hints of cocoa powder and lightly charred malts show up with patience.....very light, effervescent body manages to support a beautifully full caramel-malt flavor, nice light dry woody notes, a hint of sugared pecans....low, natural-feeling carbonation towards the finish, which is a bit drier and somewhat tart/bitter but elegantly done....really juicy and easy to drink; simple but effective. Cornfield (4329), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Oct 2, 2004 Updated: Oct 22, 2006Pouring a dark mahagony color with a quickly vanishing brown head, this has a mildy smoky aroma mixed with burnt chocolate. Not a bad roasted flavor, the chocolate coming through on the finish. It’s a little gravelly on the throat. Not too bad... but that’s not a great endorsement. Torrence Liquors, Calumet City, IL
JPDIPSO (4266), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jun 3, 2002 Updated: Oct 1, 2003Original Rate 3 June, '02 This is the beer that started my beer tasting quest many years ago, so it holds a special place in my heart/stomach. Dark blown color with a dark cream thick head. Chocolate and roast malt flavors along with a mind hop bitterness. Very satisfying. Rating 8/4/9/3/19. RERATE 30 Sept, '03 OK so my benevolence for this brew should be over. I still enjoy this brew, but perhaps my praises are based on this being the epiphany of brews. Chocolate and green hops aroma. Rich and thick in palate. A bit thin in flavor with caramel mocha flavors dominating. DocLock (4170), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 27, 2004 Thanks to Drnk_Mcdermott for this one. Pours burnt sienna with a medium off-white head. Aroma of malt, dark fruit, caramel, cabernet, hops, and slight puke (which makes sense, because puke and dark chocolate both contain butyric acid, and this one had a big dark chocolate taste...I thought it was a schwarzbier before I logged on). Tastes malty, with black licorice, caramel, nuts, some hops, and raw cocoa flavor. Medium palate, with a smooth finish. As it warmed, I got a cherry touch from it. Nice style.
