As the days grow shorter and colder in Bavaria, shoppers exhausted from a day at the open air market look forward to stopping by their local for a nourishing glass of the seasonal specialty: Weihnachtsbier. Snowstorm 2008 was designed with the cold days of winter in mind. Reddish brown in color with a complex maltiness yielding hints of spicy rye, sourdough, and chocolate. Brewed with nine different malts, including copious amounts of Munich and a touch of Rye.

Pours a dark amber with a decent size head. Aroma of chocolate, toffee, dark fruit, nuts. Nice balanced flavor, good mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours deep amber with off white head. Aroma has herbal spicy german noble hop smells mingling with bread and caramel malt. Lots of depth in the aroma. Flavor is a range of lightly sweet grainy, bready malt flavors with a tinge of citrus and mild herbal notes on the finish. Palate is nice and chewy, but if it was beefed up just a little this beer would be absolutely outstanding. As it is a beautifully balanced dark lager with nice hoppiness.

Pours a very deep amber with a medium white head. As the description depicts, this beers somewhat complex flavor includes hints of sourdough, giving a bit of an original flavor for me. Also tastes of malt, chocolate, and a fair amount of hops for medium bitterness. A pretty good beer overall.

Quite dark in color. Lots of coco, ultra malty, I didnt taste much in the way of any rye. Slight hint of the hops in there. Another good snowstorm.

Deep amber in color. Roast malt aroma. There is a big toasted malt taste up front with some caramel and rye. Some nutty notes as well. Some bitterness as it warms. Another good effort, but I liked last years brew just a tad better.

I thought this was an all around good beer. Not to much of anything. Nice caramel and oat and sweet malt flavor with a just the right amount of bitterness. I can always tell a good one when I have drank the whole glass before Im done rating it.

I can’t beleive I didn’t rate this last winter. To me, the perfect winter lager. Dark and rich and nourishing to the mind and soul. Malt charachter that is so enriching that you don’t think about hops and just sit back and get fat, thinking about spring but still smiling that it is winter and you can still drink this.

possibly one of the first time August shell hasnt disappointed me. Fruity malts on the nose. dark amber pour with nice frothy tan head. Delicious sweet fruit and malt notes from start to finish. Very nice mouth feel and very nice on the palate.

Bottle. Skunker alert. Poured a very little head and poor aroma. There is a belgian taste to this fruity and poor palate. There is few redeeming qualities, again. it may be an oxidized bottle.

12 oz bottle. Pours a rich brown color with a beige head that has nice retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet malt and a touch of bread. Flavor is bready and malty with a touch of cocoa and spice..? Very rich and tasty. Mouthfeel is a touch grainy but overall very full and smooth. This is a very drinkable, approachable winter beer. The main thing I love about Schell is that they brew a solid beer no matter what style and they have a lot of fun with the Snowstorm every year...and it shows. Well done.
