COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For the 8th beer in our Stag Series, we’ve teamed up with Gold Ochsen Brauerei in New Ulm’s sister city, Ulm Germany. Both cities are also host to fifth generation family-owned breweries and both breweries were founded by men named August. Working in collaboration, we decided to brew a Blonde Doppel Bock. Both breweries uses specialty malts from Weyerman with each brewery using their own base Pilsner malt – Rahr for Schell’s and Schwabenmalz for Gold Ochsen. Both breweries use Emerald, Tattnanger and Saphir hops during the boil and then each brewery uses a different newer German hop variety in the whirlpool and as a dry hop. Schell’s uses Polaris hops and Gold Ochsen uses Mandarina Bavaria. Both beer are then fermented with the respective brewries’ house lager yeast and matured for a couple of months before packaging.

Bottle, pours a clear amber body with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malts, grass, and faint citrus. Taste is similar, although more happy than expected for a bock. Very drinkable.

A light colored doppelbock. Well hopped for the style. Typical of the lighter bocks, the alcohol is perceivable and the malt flavors are much drier than in the darker versions. Good beer.

Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malt and some piney hops. Flavor is quite malty with a decent piney hop presence and hints of yeast, straw, and fruitiness. Light to medium body with medium carbonation. Pretty good.

Aroma is pale malts, very light fruit and slightly perfumed/beery. The flavor is pale malts, fruit/berries and a tangy/mildly beery finish.

12 oz. bottle. Quite pleasant aroma is grassy with scents of green grape, tart white wine, caramel, and apricot, at first. Some dirt or clay dryness. Later sniffs bring lemon, saffron, cumin, and salt. Aroma evokes both breakfast and dessert. Complex and multi-layered aroma. Pours a bright, shiny, clear brass with a few scattered rising bubbles. Small to moderate amount of short-lasting, yellow-ish-cream-colored head. Appetizing and appealing appearance. Surprisingly dry taste at first features a touch of champagne and a vegetal, herbal finish. It gets sweeter upon multiple sips and, by the end, is probably a bit too sweet, but the taste remains very good overall. Dry aftertaste. Medium to full body. Smooth and oily in the palate. Moderate to pretty good liveliness. August’s Bock is a very well made and enjoyable beer. I am quite impressed. It is strong across the board and very enjoyable. As a full-bodied, big lager, it gets toward being a chore toward the end, costing it a point in the overall score that I am granting it. Ideally drink about 6 to 8 ounces of it. This beer has been getting respectful but ultimately middling ratings here, perhaps due to the fact that it is in a style about which people are hesitant to gush. It really is quite, quite good, a happiness-inducing brew.

Bocks are usually sweet and dark so I’m not sure what’s going on here as this is relatively hoppy for the style. Kind of neat.

Wouldn’t call this a bock... but whatever. Aromas of pine and hops.. With a touch of malty sweetness. Similar flavors. Decent.

Bottle. Clear amber pour with a spotty white head. Big caramel malt with a touch of pine to balance. Syrupy palate. Pretty solid.
