4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
July 2010: Brown 500ml bottle. Poured into my lovely ’Wolnzacher Brauhaus’ Hopfenperle half litre glass mug.
Cracking looking beer, a deep, dark brown colour with a fantastic cream coloured foaming head. The foaming head soon became a collar and wisp, still looked fine though.
The smell was of lightly roasted malts and sweet licorice roots.
The taste and heady mix of chocolate malts, licorice and coffee hints.
Rich, creamy and a depth of body that only good DoppelBocks seem to have. The alcohol was evident, but not enough to put you off, just in the background reminding you the beer is 7.4% ABV and not to be messed with.
This is one of my favourite styles and this bottle is up there with the best in class.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Nice aroma of rich malt, complimented with fruity hops and perhaps a touch of sherry. Clear, very dark garnet with a ring of off-white foam. The flavour is all that the aroma indicated: potent and a bit spicy malt with a healthy dose of German hops. Bitterness is gentle, yet sufficient to balance the residual sweetness. A bit of ethanol apparent. Dried fruits as well as some nuttiness. Medium to full body and warming. The sweetness is not cloying at all in this beer.
