COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Exploding with hop flavor and aroma, this citrus/piney/floral ale has enough of a malt backbone to stand up to the intense bitterness.

Bottle. Amber pour with a very short, fizzy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine resin, citrus oils, and caramel. Taste is big citrus, pine, grapefruit juice and caramel with sweet malt throughout. Body is medium with a fizzy carbonation. Lingering hop bitterness and soft oily notes. Ends a touch sweeter with more malt and caramel mixed with the citrus rind, grapefruit pulp and pine needles. Tasty IPA.

Wow!!!! Iím surprised... and wish I bought a six pack... not just a taste. This IPA is sweet with hop flavor with no bitterness... well minimal. this equates to ... awesome! Amazing.

So Iíll say that Iíve experience some variation with this beer, but not within batches. Last year, this IPA was one of the better surprises that I can remember. Hoppy as hell with a great mildly sweet malt backbone. It kind of tasted like a lighter DFH 90 minute. This year, the beer is green as hell and the malty goodness isnít really there. Disappointing but at least itís fresh.

Aromas of caramel, cereal, floral, citrus, and dough. In particular, there is a bouquet of citrus that includes tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Peach and mango are detectable as well. Pours into my New Holland - High Gravity Series tulip a hazy golden orange, with a finger of frothy, white foam head. A sip confirms the scents and begins with a light sweetness, followed by medium to heavy bitterness. This IPA has a medium body with an sticky and oily feel. The carbonation is lively, helping it dance through your mouth. It finishes long and bitter, with subtle reminders of the aromatic fruits and a slight alcohol burn. Schlafly American IPA is damn near my fantasy IPA, with its fine hop driven aroma and just enough caramel malt for the backbone. However, the occasional slight alcohol burn is a bit off putting. Regardless, this is near ímust tryí status.

Whole Foods Market, DC six-pack ($13): Pours on the lighter side of IPAs with a white head. Aroma of citrus and floral hops. The taste of this beer is rather good. I like the fact that it is on the milder and more subdued side of IPAs.There are hops, but they donít really go in for the kill; instead, this is a sort of more malt-centric IPA. Really floral and mellow and easy to drink quite a few of these in a rather short period of time.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2011 Bottled 5/3/2011 Pours a medium to dark orange with a nice pillowy white head that leaves some lace. Nose is piney and mostly fruity hops backed with some caramel malts notes. Overall hop aroma is on the side of fruity, and resinous. Not so much citrus character. Taste is again super resinous and fruity with pine and malts flavors. Ahh but there is some citrus character a few drinks in as it finishes. Medium bodied IPA with some biting carbonation. A really nice IPA but I do remember it having a heavier hop character when I had it on draft last year.

12oz bottle - This beer has a great aroma of fruit and hops. Well balanced flavor. Lots of carbonation. Tastes very fresh and clean Ė bottle only 3 weeks old. Very little alcohol taste and good bitter aftertaste. This is the first Schlafly beer I really like.

draft at tap room. aroma is slow coming and neutral, touches on metallic notes before slightest hints of pine show. appearance is pleasantly hazy with solid head that reduces at moderate pace. flavor is outright bitterness, ífive aliveí fruits present, drowning out simpler pine or grassy notes. drinks like a regular IPA, no booze detectable.

Great hazy copper and orange tinted body with a thin tan head. Aroma of mild yeast, honey, malt, citrus and a bit of pine - not too much hops noticeable. Medium-bodied; Assertive hop flavour at first with a perfumey and honey bite and a good malt backbone and a tiny amount of grassy tastes. Aftertaste is mild, yet hoppy with some sweet flavours and a little perfume and resin flavours near the end. Good balance of malt and hops and a pleasant amount of sweetness. Overall, nice but could use a lot more hops, then again, I could have drank this a bit quicker. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Ye Olde Spirit Shop in Frederick, Maryland on 29-July-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 16-March-2011.
