3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft to taster. Looks good; a somewhat opaque dark cola with foamy light beige head that dissipates into sticky lacing. Smells solid; dark malt, chocolate, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford.
Appearance: The body is an opaque black with a tall tan head that has excellent retention and is rather dense.
Aroma: The aroma is of grass, pine and orange with a hint of cocoa. The hops are strong here.
Taste: Cocoa is light on the intro which leads to a slightly roasted and piney mid-taste with hints of smoke appearing by the end with grapefruit and orange. Interesting.
Palate: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is one of the better black IPAs, the hops don’t particularly clash with the malts. I like this.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pint on tap. Has a nice creamy disc of foam that endures. Smells of evergreen resin, grapefruit and coffee. Taste is the same plus some piquant green herb and dark chocolate. Has a lingering finish of mint, resin and bittersweet dark cocoa. Dry medium body is smooth, with average carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tulip glass draft at the Martin City Brewing Company in Martin City, Missouri. The pour is blackish brown, soft faint ruby hue, murky, with a smallish tan head. Nice lace left behind as the beer drinks down. The aroma is fresh cereal grain, soft toast, almost burning toast along some soft pine hoppiness. Clean and fresh nose. The taste is a nice blend between the soft roast, the pine hop, and the cereal and fruit grain sweetness of the malt. all flavors balanced nicely. The palate is light to medium bodied, soft natural carbonation, and earth and burnt toast in the dry finish. Easy drinking beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark maroon brown color with a muddy, murky appearance. Tannish head. Aroma is sweet malts with sugary syrup notes. Lots of hops in this as well. Floral and citrus. Flavor is very roasted with toasted bready characteristics. Different to say the least. Bitter burnt finish

2.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap. Comes almost black with a small tan head. Strange aroma, not really sure how to describe. Taste is smoke, malt, grass, coffee, and pine. Not a fan of this one.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep black, low dense tan/light hop pellet green head. Aroma has a mild grassy presence, strong centennial orange hoppiness, light toasted malt. Flavor has a strong hoppiness, lot of grassy notes with some light orange sweetness, a light dose of roasted barley at the end. Body is light, low amount of carbonation, slight dryness. Overall a good brew and it’s nice to see this style done without overdoing it on hop variety with a lot of citrus character.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 Tasted on tap at Bottleworks, it poured a nearly opaque dark brown, reddish at the edges when held to the light, with moderate beige foam and lace. Aromas of grain, burnt grain, toast, dried fruit. Chinook hops reminded me of Arrogant Bastard, Simcoe hops reminded me of my favorite New Belgium beers. Mellow, harmonious flavours. Not overwhelmingly bitter, thankfully, burnt orange, grapefruit, herbal tea, very earthy and resiny. Nice chalky, mineral water essence, well-rounded mouthfeel but finishes dry, crisper than most recent Schlafly releases. Recipe was recently reformulated to 7%, which means they charge more, but it’s well worth it. To me, this delicious beer is proof positive that Schlafly is still hip to even the most trendy new styles. Delicious, and highly recommended.
UPDATE 4/6/2013: Tasted again (several times) at the 2013 Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition fest. Still in love with this delicious brew. Very well-crafted, hoppy, dark strong ale with a crisp mouthfeel and nice dry finish. Definitely one of the best of the fest.

On tap at Cugino’s. It poured a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma was of hops, dark malts, some coffee and a little grass. The taste was earthy hops, toasted malts, chocolate, earth and some citrus peel. A very good Black IPA.
