Commercial Description:
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

2008 bottling. Deep brown color with a dark tan head. Nice oily nutty chocolate aroma. Medium body with a silky smooth mouthfeel. Good roasty, toasty, woody, nutty, blackened malt flavors with a bourbon vanilla sweetness. Most tasty.

750 mL bottle. Poured a deep brown, nearly black with a three finger tan head. Aroma was huge and delicious. Notes of bourbon and vanilla dominate, with touches of chocolate and roasted malt present as well. The flavor was excellent and creamy as well. Strong vanilla and oak present, with a small hint of bourbon. Roasted malt is present in the base, but only as a carrier for the other flavors present. Very full bodied, with only a slight bit of carbonation. This is the best Schlafly beer I’ve sampled.

750 ml bottle - tried the 2006 (thanks to after4ever) and 2007 (thanks to bvc); 2006 - very slight sour, rich aromas of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate; drinks silky smooth with mildly dry; much more bourbon in this one; 2007 - jet black and a little more syrupy; coffee more noticeable and the bourbon less so; same smoothness; a little more raw with sweet chocolate and bitter coffee; barrel aging not as strong and a touch more in balance; wow, this is a terrific beer

Boxed 2008 750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a dark chestnut brown color with a thin head. Aroma is roasted malts, bourbon, oak, coconut, vanilla. Taste is strong bourbon with roasted malts, coffee, vanilla, cotton candy. Full bodied. Slightly bitter. Interesting and pretty good.

Bottle shared by robert at stateline. Oak aroma duh??? Brown in color almost black but lets some light through. Decent head. Taste is alot of oak/bourbon a little overdone. Chocolate roasted malt taste. Texture was thin but not watery. Not bad but not great.... Thanks robert for opening this beer.

Pours root beer brown with an unattractive light tan head that turns in to a film across the top. Thin in the pour and the mouthfeel. Nose is chocolate, roasted malt and a bit of oak. The flavor is a bit like vinous fruits and some malt astringency. Bitter coffee finish.

Bottle. Pours a dense, syrupy black. Yields no head, but keeps a thin lacing. This stout burns like a whisky. Very good warmer.
