2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear amber body with orange highlights. A well retained, thin, wispy white head leaves behind only minimal lacing. Ridiculously unbalanced aroma. This trait alone neccesitates a need to take this recipe back to the theoretical drawing board. Torturous amounts of cloves belie a pithy orange and soapy ester nose laden with toasted malts and unnecessary sugar and spice levels. All in all, a boring and unpleasant aroma, substandard by any stretch or grading curve. Flavor is at first much easier to tkae. Clove isnít so dominant. Toasty malt seems very pleasant now and in good quantity. The realization that this has yet to reach a suitable temperature to really dissect the flavor leads me to wait; a mistake. Now the flavor is back at it again, with spicing that is so over-the-top I decide not to finish the glass. Finishes spicy and lingering, with a stinging sensation left behind, no doubt, by all the clove. My breath is stinky now as well. Oh well, better luck next year. Not a catastophic failure, but I donít ever want to revisit this.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a redder coppery brown with a thin white film of a head. The nose is sweet with lots of ginger. Toasty, malty, with a bit of orange peel and a bit more cloves. Something resembling burnt socks, slightly. The mouthfeel is creamy, full and smooth. The flavor is a lot like the nose, only those socks come through more, and they are toasted, not burned. The flavors are still very ginger dominated. A bit of spice in other directions, though more subtle. Lingering sweetness. The 8% is well enough hidden.

2008 bottle via trade. One of those messy, spicey, pumpkin pie, holiday brews. Not my style. No good.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Pours a clear dark ruby body with a small fizzy off-white head that faded pretty quickly. The nose is a full on Christmas spice assault, heavy nutmeg and cinnamon for the most part. Orange peel, clove, and a light pine tree note as well. The flavor is super spicy as well with a base maltiness thatís slightly sweet and toasty with a bit of graininess. The dominant spice in the flavor is a tie between cinnamon and clove. Finishes with a spicy and slightly sweet lingering maltiness. No real indication that this is in the 8% ABV range. Medium bodied with a slight stickiness, fizzy moderate carbonation. Canít get into this one too much, itís just a little too heavy on the spicing for my tastes.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle... Clear amber ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Malty, spicy aroma with notes of toffee and tons of clove. The flavor is sweet and chock-full of holiday spice. Itís lightly bitter, but not nearly enough to halt the cloying onslaught of sweet, buttery, over-spiced gingerbread. Full-bodied and creamy with moderate carbonation. Finishes sweet, spicy and tongue-numbing. Too sweet and spicy for me! Thanks, vyvvy, for the bottle!

Draft at Old Chicago in Peoria, IL. Served in pint glass. Dark color. Roasty aroma. Very spicy nose. Alc and spice in the mouth along with some chocolate. Pretty solid stuff. Although I can wait another year before itís available again.
