3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 EtTuCthulhu (459) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - APR 6, 2013
The appearance of this beer is a reddish dark brown with a large white head, and the aroma fuses hints of molasses, clove, fig, and slight undercurrent of wild sour cherries. The taste mildly umami, slightly sour, and a touch sweet; also, the palate combines a long astringent finish, oily texture, full body, and average carbonation.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 seymour (1136) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - JAN 9, 2013
Tasted on tap at Pi during the Schlafly "tap takeover," currently labeled as Schlafly Old English Ale. Dark, chocolatey, very roasty, some coffee and tea-like tannins, strong caramel and toffee, residual sweetness. No trace of hops. Profoundly melanoidy and toasty, so much so it was one-dimensional. Medium body, chewy mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Well-hidden alcohol. A nice enough big brown winter warmer, but not delicious. I hope to try one after several years of beneficial aging.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 csaso (964) - Missouri, USA - DEC 31, 2012
Bottle - nice size light tan colored foamy head, beautiful clear medium-dark amber color, nice balanced malt aroma and flavor, caramel, toffee, biscuit, all balanced by fair hop notes - this is really good!

Pours a clear bright yet dark amber with a full off white head that stays to ring the glass. Aroma is caramel malt and a little licorice. Taste is sweet (almost cloying) mouthcoating caramel malt, licorice and a buttery, biscuity character. Moderately hopped with some alcohol noted after the swallow. Pretty decent, but somewhat astringent. Earlier Rating: 12/18/2011 Total Score: 3.6 Pours a hazy reddish amber with a big yellow/tan head that diminishes, but remains. Aroma is roasted malt, maple and mild hops. Rich, smooth and buttery, flavor is sweet roasted malt, maple syrup and caramel. Hop bitterness is nearly non-existant. Super effort, this should join the regular stable.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2012 Pours a ruby/amber that is clear and pours a one finger head that leaves moderate lacing. Caramel and nutty malt flavors. A little bready. Very rich and mildly sweet. Maybe a hint of clove. Mild herbal hop flavor. Mildly sweet throughout. Mild to moderate carbonation. Medium body with sticky mouthfeel. Long dry finish. This is my first old ale and I really like it.

It poured a hazy amber color with a small off-white head. The aroma was of some yeast, spices and warm malts. The flavor was definitely warm malt, with hints of fruit and spices. A very good Old Ale.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jmagnus87 (1450) - Rockford, Illinois, USA - DEC 7, 2011
750ml bottle poured into an English Pint. Pours a clear light brown with a small bit of white head that disappears almost immediately. Aroma of cinnamon and orange zest with a hint of caramel. Taste is light sweet. Baking spices with a little citrus and light caramel. Medium bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad...but the Christmas ale is a lot better!
