A mild-mannered brown ale, medium-bodied with a rich malty character and a decent dose of American hops.

It looks pretty. Now for the rest of the story. Horribly over-hopped. Hops aroma completly masks any aroma of malt. The same goes for taste-- all I get is hops, hops, hops, with a very long, resinous-bitter finish. I had three friends do a blind taste test, and not one of them identified this as a brown ale. Two actually thought it was IPA! If you like IPA, you might like this. If you are expecting the character, flavor, and aroma of a brown ale, you’ll be disapointed.

Pours a clear golden copper with a big full antique lace head that goes a little flat after a couple of minutes. Aroma is dry grain and floral spiciness. Taste is sweet caramel malt, buttery biscuits and a little hop bitterness to finish it off. Good product.

On tap at Pizza Paradiso Dupont. Dark caramel brown body with thin head. Nose is vanilla, creamy, malty. Tate is malty, roasty. Very creamy texture. Nice.

Tap at Paradiso dupont. Pours a clear cola red. Medium tan Foam. Spots of lacing. Nose is hazelnut, praline, cookie. Taste is really nice peanut butter chocolate cookie, woah, hazelnut, almond, praline, Toblerone. Surprisingly good. Worth finding. Palate finishes with a harsh metal twang typical of Paradiso’s tap system. I’ll ignore that.

On tap at Llwelyn’s in St. Charles. It poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was a little hoppy with citrus and a touch of maltiness. The taste was slightly grainy, a little citrus hoppiness, since it was dry-hopped, but lacks depth and backbone. Not bad.

On tap 4 oz. sample at Pizza Paradiso in DuPont Circle, Washington, DC. Clear, dense ruby-red with large yellow-tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of mild sweet roasted malt, chocolate, toast, grass and citrus. Taste of grass, mild spiciness, sweet roasted malt, toast and citrus. UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 8/30/2012: Fresh draft pint at Schlafly Bottleworks in a standard pint glass. It poured a near-opaque dark reddish-brown color with lasting beige foam and LOTS of lace. Great appearance. Toasty and roasty aromas with a great mix of American and English style hops: earthy, citrusy, not too much grapefruit, some evergreen resin. Flavors of dark toasted husky whole grain bread, ever-so-slight residual malt sweetness, tangy with a great grain/hops bitter balance. Hint of chocolate milk and Mexican hot chocolate. Very light char. Mmmm. Medium body and carbonation, lingering toasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Yes, I’m a Schlafly homer, but this is a downright delicious beer. UPDATE 9/15/2012: sampled again on tap at the 2012 Schlafly Hop In The City festival, and I stand by my high rating. Applying cask-conditioning to this particular beer was a natural choice, and was more expertly done than others that day. UPDATE 4/6/2013: my rating for this beer just keeps going up. I was lucky enough to taste it again at the Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition fest, this time cask-conditioned with Simcoe dry-hops. Most delicious version yet. Mmmm.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2012 Pours a clear dark brown with one finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves moderate lacing.caramel and toasted malt up front with slight sweet flavor that is followed by pine and resinous hops that is moderately bitter.medium body moderate carbonation.clean palate. Medium finish that is mild to moderate in bitterness. Had this on tap at Hop in the City on draft for the second time, increasing aroma and taste to 8 each and overall to 14. This beer surprised me yesterday. Very good!
