3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at brewpub
A little tired from a long day I did not get a chance to spend as much time as I wanted here. I finally chose a pint of the American Brown which was on cask at the time for $4.25. It turned out to be a good choice. Compared to the disgrace that was Morgan Street the local taps at Schlafly were a vast improvement. If I lived in the area I would be here often.
Aroma / Appearance - The gradiated mahogany body had a rosy tinge at the bottom where it lightened up. The oatmeal colored head was a nice contrast. Wood shavings, peat moss, and mellow hops brought to mind freshly seeded grass after a heavy thunderstorm.
Flavor / Palate - Muddy oak limbs mixed with light chocolate reminded me of an Oreo shake that was heavy on the cookies. Fluid and filling the mouthfeel did not feel delicate. Putting this in a cask seems to have brought out some better characteristics. I wish I’d had time to more properly delve into the offerings but in a limited time frame there is only so much to do. I will definitely have to return here on my next visit to Saint Louis.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Growler. Pours deep cola brown with a thin head. Aroma is nutty and roasted, some fresh cut grass and piney notes as well. Flavor is warm, toasted chocolate, coffee, and wood notes, followed by grassy hops and piney resin. Smooth, easy to drink, and tasty.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pour is dark brown and clean looking. Off white head. Toasted malt nose and raisen cookies including the spices. Flavor is akin to the aroma with anise, a hint of smoke, and zingy hop effects. A nice representation of the style. Sweet and malty with hops in the background. Pleasant.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted 9/24/09. Draft from The Bottleworks. Dark brown amber hue with a clinging off-white head. Aromas of toasted malts and molassis with a touch anise. Mild fudge undertone. Medium bodied with smooth malts and a slightly bitter finish. Tangy esters mix very nicely with the nutty brownie flavors. The malts are dominant with a smooth and mild finish. Good session.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 12, 2009 Served at the Schlafly Bottleworks location on 9-5-09. Dark born/blck color, thin off-white, filmy head. Almost non-existant aroma, very light brunt note with some toasted malt hints but really not much else. Flavor is a mixture of chocolate malt and maris otter giving it a pretty toasty uniqueness, not much hop or sweetness but a light grassy hops note with a slight ashy ending. Mouth feel is light, low carbonation and light lacing on the glass. Overall this is just an okay brew. A pretty unique flavor but not too sure how well everything worked in conjunction with one another in the brew.
10-9-09 Cask Aged American Brown
Pours a brown-ruby color with a tan/off-white head that is pretty thin. Aroma is a smooth light toasted malty note, light chocolate hints, light Fuggles-type hoppiness and a grassy/weedy hops ending. Flavor has a very toasted malt note, some Maris Otter maltiness, light chocolate, light nuttiness, grassy hops as a whole. Low carbonation, warm and clear. Overall a good brewthat works well for dry hopping witnin the cask, much more grassy than the normal, non-cask aged version.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Firkin tapping at Party Source.
Poured a hazy brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt, nut and earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and lively carbonation. Solid toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.
Good complex brew.

Roast stale coffee. And I mean really stale. Indistinct roastiness in the aroma too. Lively carbonation. Fits the brown ale style pretty well with plenty of roasty malty body. Some smokiness too. Very tasty.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught at Helsinki Beer Festival 2009. Mahagony color with creamy head. Chocolatey, nutty, toasty and slightly coffeish aroma. The flavor follows the aroma with medium to firm bitterness. Slightly astringent nutty and chocolatey finish. Burps american hops (centennial?) but does not otherwise have a lot of hop aroma or flavor. The aroma and finish is better than the middle part.
