2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap at the brewpub; served in their imperial pint glass. Pours a beautiful deep brown with garnet highlights and a creamy, off-white, diminishing head. The aroma is fairly muted: dark roasted and caramel malts with a piny hop backing. It doesn’t smell like a typical brown. Light to medium-bodied and slick on the tongue, it ends bitter and dry. This tastes more like a malt-forward pale ale than a brown. Perhaps the name comes simply from the color, as the flavor is a roasted, almost burnt, malt front with a distinctly unbrownlike dry hoppy finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours brown with a reddish hue. The aroma is nutty with toasted malt and coffee with some stale-ish notes. Medium body with soft carbonation. The taste is nutty and woody with toasted / roasted malt - a bit harsh and lightly sour. The finish goes heavy on the woody and coffee aspects and is quite bitter. A fairly aggressive version of a brown ale.

Tasted at St. Louis BrewFest, May 12, 2007.
I liked this ale, esp. the nice roasted sweet malts. Palate a bit off, though -- made the ale finish on a very flat note.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
From the cask, served in a Schlafly imperial pint glass. Poured a clear dark brown with a creamy off-white head.
Aromas of roasted malts, nutty coffee and caramel toffee, a light fruitiness and a touch of earth.
Moderate carbonation and a crisp, dry, slick, creamy smooth medium bodied mouthfeel.
A nice roasted malt taste, nutty coffee meshed with light flavors of cocoa and caramel, a subtle fruitiness in the middle, an earthy bitterness towards the end, the alcohol is slightly noticeable at the end too, and a dry malty finish.
I really enjoyed this, easy, quaffable drinkability, I don’t know why I hadn’t tried this before at the Taproom.

Great tasting ale and when not trying many of the other seasonals from Schlafy I always can count on this one when I visit the Taproom.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Enjoyed at the taproom with beerdrenched. Pours a nice rich brown with light brown head that leaves some good lace. Aromas of toffee, chocolate, and medium roast coffee. Background earthy notes from the hops. The flavor has a lot of roast and some dark chocolate. Okay bitterness to finish. Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Not bad at all for a brown.

tap-hop in the city 05-man, im impressed with this one! pours clear brown amber with a big sudsy beige head. nutty, peanut quality on the aroma with a significant dose of some leafy, earthy hops as well. nutty flavors dominate with a hint of chocolate. long cashew/peanuty finish that was very nice. medium body for the style. one of the better of this style!

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sampled on tap at the Tap Room, STL. An incredible brown that must be experienced. Dark brown with a generous tan head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by coffee and bitter, dark chocolate. Caramel and some spicy, piney hops are also in the mix, but are in the background. Full-bodied, light to moderately carbonated with a dry, clean finish. Very close to porter in style. I LOVE this beer.
