Sampled on tap at the Tap Room, STL. An incredible brown that must be experienced. Dark brown with a generous tan head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by coffee and bitter, dark chocolate. Caramel and some spicy, piney hops are also in the mix, but are in the background. Full-bodied, light to moderately carbonated with a dry, clean finish. Very close to porter in style. I LOVE this beer.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 8/30/2012: Fresh draft pint at Schlafly Bottleworks in a standard pint glass. It poured a near-opaque dark reddish-brown color with lasting beige foam and LOTS of lace. Great appearance. Toasty and roasty aromas with a great mix of American and English style hops: earthy, citrusy, not too much grapefruit, some evergreen resin. Flavors of dark toasted husky whole grain bread, ever-so-slight residual malt sweetness, tangy with a great grain/hops bitter balance. Hint of chocolate milk and Mexican hot chocolate. Very light char. Mmmm. Medium body and carbonation, lingering toasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Yes, I’m a Schlafly homer, but this is a downright delicious beer.
UPDATE 9/15/2012: sampled again on tap at the 2012 Schlafly Hop In The City festival, and I stand by my high rating. Applying cask-conditioning to this particular beer was a natural choice, and was more expertly done than others that day.
UPDATE 4/6/2013: my rating for this beer just keeps going up. I was lucky enough to taste it again at the Schlafly Repeal of Prohibition fest, this time cask-conditioned with Simcoe dry-hops. Most delicious version yet. Mmmm.

Very dry, hoppy spicy rue flavor, roasty bitter body, very drinkable and light on the palate. quite good.

Draft poured into a shaker. Drank as "John Brown’s Ale" at John Brown’s Pub. Pours a clear nut brown with about a finger of off-white head. Aroma of pine and roasty malt. Taste is about the same. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, very good. I would gladly drink again.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2012 Pours a clear dark brown with one finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves moderate lacing.caramel and toasted malt up front with slight sweet flavor that is followed by pine and resinous hops that is moderately bitter.medium body moderate carbonation.clean palate. Medium finish that is mild to moderate in bitterness.
Had this on tap at Hop in the City on draft for the second time, increasing aroma and taste to 8 each and overall to 14. This beer surprised me yesterday. Very good!

From the cask, served in a Schlafly imperial pint glass. Poured a clear dark brown with a creamy off-white head.
Aromas of roasted malts, nutty coffee and caramel toffee, a light fruitiness and a touch of earth.
Moderate carbonation and a crisp, dry, slick, creamy smooth medium bodied mouthfeel.
A nice roasted malt taste, nutty coffee meshed with light flavors of cocoa and caramel, a subtle fruitiness in the middle, an earthy bitterness towards the end, the alcohol is slightly noticeable at the end too, and a dry malty finish.
I really enjoyed this, easy, quaffable drinkability, I don’t know why I hadn’t tried this before at the Taproom.

A little tired from a long day I did not get a chance to spend as much time as I wanted here. I finally chose a pint of the American Brown which was on cask at the time for $4.25. It turned out to be a good choice. Compared to the disgrace that was Morgan Street the local taps at Schlafly were a vast improvement. If I lived in the area I would be here often.
Aroma / Appearance - The gradiated mahogany body had a rosy tinge at the bottom where it lightened up. The oatmeal colored head was a nice contrast. Wood shavings, peat moss, and mellow hops brought to mind freshly seeded grass after a heavy thunderstorm.
Flavor / Palate - Muddy oak limbs mixed with light chocolate reminded me of an Oreo shake that was heavy on the cookies. Fluid and filling the mouthfeel did not feel delicate. Putting this in a cask seems to have brought out some better characteristics. I wish I’d had time to more properly delve into the offerings but in a limited time frame there is only so much to do. I will definitely have to return here on my next visit to Saint Louis.

Tap at Paradiso dupont. Pours a clear cola red. Medium tan Foam. Spots of lacing. Nose is hazelnut, praline, cookie. Taste is really nice peanut butter chocolate cookie, woah, hazelnut, almond, praline, Toblerone. Surprisingly good. Worth finding. Palate finishes with a harsh metal twang typical of Paradiso’s tap system. I’ll ignore that.
