4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 Mibeersnob (8) - Howell, Michigan, USA - FEB 18, 2013 does not count
Notes from 12-20-2010: You know immediately that this is an Imperial Stout. Rich, dark color. Nice head (poured from tap) that lingered. Although aroma does not seem apparent at first, the pungent oak barrel caramelized sugars come forward with the sweet smell of bourbon. A crisp, clean, taste as it sits in the mouth is followed by the warm, relaxing bourbon going down. Overall, this has to be my all-time favorite beer.

Pours pitch black with a small tan ring of fizz. Smells of licorice and a touch of coffee. Taste is licorice and mint with a bourbon vanilla sweetness and a touch of chocolate. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Schalfly Imperial Stout finishes with a medley of sweeetnesses.

Aroma of moderate coffee, milk chocolate and some resin. Appearance is black with bubbly tan head. Flavor actually had a touch of salt with the usual coffee and chocolate notes. Palate is medium, slick and soft. Good, and interesting to boot.

Growler to snifter. Looks good; cola black with beige lacing. Smells sweet and malty with notes of bourbon. Tastes the same, only better, with a slightly thin but solid mouthfeel. Definitely getting some bourbon notes in this. Good beer.

Snifter at the bottleworks. Pour is deep dark brown with a small ring of tan foam. Aroma and flavor loaded with roasted malt, butterscotch, vanilla, brown sugar, light chocolate, and a hint of bourbon. This is really complex and quite smooth. It had a lot of the qualities of a barrel aged stout, but I m told it was not. A lot of flavor and complexity for a standard imperial stout. Good stuff.

Lots of roasted malt aromas. Not much else going on beside the malt aroma. Obviously a stout. Not bad overall.

Sampled at the 2012 Heritage Festival. It poured a black color with a dark tan head. The aroma was of chocolate and dark-roasted malts. The taste was of chocolate, coffee, some nuttiness, a little smoke and a mild hop spice. A decent Imperial Stout.
