tjthresh (1750), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Oct 16, 2005 05 Hop in the City/KC.There is nothing to this beer at all. Very little aroma. Inky black in the glass with no head. some roast and chocolate, but not nearly enough for an imperial stout. Pretty dry. Not a very good example of the style. jcr (1139), Jasper, Indiana, USA Oct 4, 2005 Hop in the City: This is a nice sipping imperial stout though not as thick in body or mouthfeel as other imp stouts I have had which is nice. It has notes of chocolate, roasted malts and hops in the aroma. The flavor is full of malts, coffee and sweet chocolate with a slight hop presence and a bit of smoke. Enjoyable. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA Oct 2, 2005 Hop in the City - subdued, soft nose is pleasant with notes of oat, sweet chocolate chip and some hop citrus. Coffee body has a great smooth carbonation. More sweet chocolate in the body works great with the roastiness. Good, but drinks more like a sweet stout than an Impy. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA Sep 19, 2005 tap-hop in the city 05. pours almost black with a brown tinge on the edge of the glass. very little head to speak of. the keg was pretty flat to say the least. super roasty note predominates the aroma with touches chocolate, char and light rum rasin. the flavors are very roasty, char and lightly alcoholic. again, the flatness killed the palate. long burnt, roasty finish. Not a bad impy, but i bet it was much better fresh back in the winter. egajdzis (3604), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 15, 2004 Poured an opaque black color with a small, bubbly, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee beans, chocolate, and light cherry aroma. Milk chocolate, coffee, caramel, nuts, hops in the taste, and just a light amount of alcohol in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Great bottling job Jeff! kwoeltje (1313), Manchester, Missouri, USA Sep 18, 2004 Updated: Dec 31, 2007(Hops in the City) Deep black with small head. Lots of malt and hops in the body with distinct coffee flavor and noticeable alcohol. MarkR (68), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Dec 21, 2003 Half-gallon growler

A dense, creamy tan head covers what appears to be deep black, but is really an extremely dark reddish brown. Great lacing. Aroma is exceptionally malty, with lots of coffee and roasted grain, chocolate, licorice, toffee, cream, vanilla, earth, and smoke. The flavor carries on the malt barrage, with a firm black malt note leading the way and bringing an acidic, bitter bite. Midway, the rest of the flavors appear, with licorice and milk chocolate standing out the most. Hops are present, but they come across mainly in the form of green, leafy flavor, as so much of the bitterness comes from the dark grains. Finishes burnt and charred, with a blanket of smoke and seared caramel. Alcohol is hidden quite well, as it doesn’t feel and drink like 8.9% Body is a bit light compared to other Imperials, but that only improves it’s drinkability. Overall, a damn fine Imperial stout that’s brewed only 15 miles from my doorstep. God bless Schlafly/The St. Louis Brewery! hopscotch (5446), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Dec 20, 2003 Updated: Feb 3, 2008Very dark, sparkling clear, ruby ale. Small, creamy, well-tanned head.
Notes of buttery milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, dark fruit, cinnamon and burnt flowers in the aroma.
A touch of alcohol in the nose and flavor... only a touch.
Tons of malt in this dark ale. Sticky, sweet flavor with tons of chocolate, molasses and smoke. The bitter hops are evident, but not sufficient to balance things out. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, bittersweet finish. Very good brew! Thanks to MJR for the growler!
