hopscotch (4228), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Dec 20, 2003 Updated: Feb 3, 2008Very dark, sparkling clear, ruby ale. Small, creamy, well-tanned head.
Notes of buttery milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, dark fruit, cinnamon and burnt flowers in the aroma.
A touch of alcohol in the nose and flavor... only a touch.
Tons of malt in this dark ale. Sticky, sweet flavor with tons of chocolate, molasses and smoke. The bitter hops are evident, but not sufficient to balance things out. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Lengthy, bittersweet finish. Very good brew! Thanks to MJR for the growler! Cornfield (4223), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA May 21, 2007 I had this side-by-side with the BA version, which is much tastier. This is dark brown enough to be called black and has a thin tan head. It’s got an aroma of milk chocolate, roasted malt and a touch of barley, some smoke, and a splash of old coffee. Some dark dried fruit is added to the flavor along with a light taste of alcohol. It’s a bit thin and finishes on a dry note. Not bad. <font size=-4> Radio Maria, Champaign, IL<font size=-1> BBB63 (3619), La Porte, Indiana, USA Sep 19, 2003 Bourbon barrel aged at Hop in the City: Nearly opaque with slight brown edges, little head, oily appearance. Aroma hinted at coffee, toffee, plum, oak wood, bittersweet chocolate, and vanilla. Nice fruity twang followed by heavy and sticky malts. The finish was very dry and woody despite the heavy nature of the brew. Wonderful and complex Imperial. Right up my alley! thedm (3289), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 20, 2003 This rating was from the Hop In The City event where brews from the previous year were sampled (5 oz) by the attendees from kegs. This brew came aged from a bourbon whiskey barrel. It poured a small head of large sized light brown colored bubbles that left behind an opaque black colored body and a no lacing. It had a malty and a mildly alcoholic mouthfeel, The flavor was a bourbon malt mix with a medium alcohol content.
