This collaboration with Kaldiís Coffee uses the cold toddy method of extraction for the coffee. We mix it with Oatmeal Stout for an exceptionally delicious beer.

Rich black pour, with strong coffee scents dominating. Tastes like a smooth, roasty iced coffee. Hop and coffee bitterness play together well, with neither going over the top. Medium to heavy body, but doesnít sit heavy after going down. One of my favorite coffee stouts, especially for the price.

Pours black color with a small off-white head. Aroma of coffee, dark roasted malts, cocoa and some chocolate. Flavor of licorice, coffee notes, cocoa and caramel malts. Very nice and roasty.

I tend to associate coffee stouts with being big imperial brews, so when I find one in a smaller body itís an interesting experience. Schlafly Coffee Stout is more of a standard American stout with coffee added, and is a drinker-friendly beer in many ways. Itís not as good as the imperialized brews, but for something on the smaller end itís impressive.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Opaque black body. Forms a small, tan, soapy head which almost completely dissipates and leaves little lacing on the glass.

Smell: Medium-roast coffee aroma plus a general sweet scent.

Taste: If you want the delectable palate of a coffee stout but without the density of an imperial, then Schlafly Coffee Stout is the beer for you. Remarkably sweet all around, with an almost cola-like taste and accompanying sweetness, yet not overtly sugary or cloying. A gentle bitterness through the middle imparting some roasted malt taste and a hint of hops. The palate ends with a coffee taste thatís on the darker, more robust spectrum (though it should be since the label says itís brewed with French roasted coffee). The coffee taste lingers for a moment or two and can actually be savored with some effort. Itís a somewhat simplistic, repetitive palate, but thatís okay because the net result is a taste I really enjoy.

Drinkability: What really makes this beer appreciable is the fact its palate is flavorful without needing the raw energy of a bigger beer. The mouthfeel and body are both perfectly medium - neither thick nor thin, neither short nor cloying. It goes down smooth with an aftertaste thatís quite clean. At 5.7% ABV it would be easy to throw back a few of these as dessert with any guilt.

lighter body to black cola looking brew with fleeting brown hues and beery finish like a nice malty lager pils. plus dark burnt caramel butterscotch. the alcohol, the layered coffee flavor with a slight warming and roasty effect with sweet coffee finish like with a touch of evaporated milk. this coffee stout is the real deal. kind of a dead malt aroma though.

(12oz bottle) medium light brown, fine tan creamy head. Nose of raisin, coffee, cream, not very complex. Taste of old acidic coffee, roasty, creamy, hoppy/bitter linger.

Bottled December 10, 2012.
Appearance: This pours dark and it shows in the body, no light goes through except the thinnest of edges. The head is thin and tan and short lived. It settles into a light coating with a foamy ring.
Aroma: Roasted coffee and cocoa come to mind, slight earthiness to it. Great strength, good aroma.
Taste: From the aroma I was expecting more flavor, but itís a bit restrained in comparison. The flavor is a bit bitter coffee and dark chocolate, but itís unremarkable. Easy to drink though and a lingering coffee.
Palate: Medium to thick with a full chewy body, moderate carbonation.
Overall: The flavor is really lacking after the aroma, which is a shame as the aroma is excellent. I think this is a decent beer, but it needs some re-working in the flavor for me to love it.

February 13, 2013 - on tap at Royale. Dark brown pour with nice amount of head and lacing. Strong coffee and roasted malt aroma. Taste was consistent with aroma maybe chocolate in there as well, but a deep rich coffee almost espresso flavor. Medium to full body and relatively smooth.

Coffee, coffee, and more coffee. Light bodied and well carbed, this is not engine oil; imperial stout freaks will be disappointed. But coffee freaks like me will like the drinkability and robust roastiness of the coffee, with a lingering oatiness in the finish. Not quite on the same level as lagunitas cappuccino stout, but for the price iím not sure itís beatable. Good stuff from schlafly.

I havenít had a coffee stout that tastes more like coffee. Strangely, I think that was the problem with this one. If I want a heavy coffee, Iíll drink that. Sometimes its better to have a hint of the flavor, as opposed to being overwhelmed by it.

33 cl bottle @ One Pint Pub. Rated on 19.02.2010
Aroma has coffee, some truffles and dark chocolate. Flavour has mocha, some dark chocolate, licorice and hints of cocoa. Feels a bit thin but I like the strong coffee aromas here.
