This light-colored, refreshing ale is THE beer of Cologne. Well balanced and mild mannered, this beer is great for summer.

Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours lightly hazy & perfectly golden with a big semi-loose head.

The aroma is nice, minerally with a decent herbal hop character. Clean & inviting.

The flavor is clean, a touch sweet up front with a dry finish. The bitterness is mild but enjoyable & somewhat balancing. It’s got a light herbal hop character, some honey, and some doughiness.

A nice version of the style I think.

On tap @ Schlafly. Clear golden pour with a white head. Bready malt, some sweet apple, and a light grassiness. A little bit watery. Lots of bready malt on the palate. Tons of apple and floral hops. A bit low on the carbonation and somewhat watery. Easy to drink, I suppose.

Nose is neutral with only a slight light breadiness to it. Fairly clear light yellow. Some mineralness after smelling again. Taste is slightly peppery and grainy with not much else going on. Very neutral but also seems to lack any subtle esters that I like in kolsch beer.

Reviewed from notes. Most of the time I’ve had this, it was poured into a pint glass, but a couple of times I had it in a stange. Honestly, I didn’t see much difference. The appearance was a nice looking golden color with a fast rising carbonation to be seen. The head was about a finger’s worth of white foaminess that dies practically immediately. There was some super light lacing left gracing the sides of the glass. The smell embodied a full grainy assortment of corns, barley and wheat, all combined evenly sweet. The taste was basically the same with a nice sweet corn aftertaste. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a good sessionable aspect allowing this one to perhaps be consumed in large quantities if they wanted to. The carbonation seems to be just a tad under as it just seemed like this was just too drinkable. Overall, for the most part, I say this was a nice take by an American brewer for the style, different but still nice.

A hazy golden beer with minimal head. The aroma is sweet toasty grain and floral hops. The flavor is light malt, herbal hops, and watery funk.

14-MAY-2014, draft @Churchkey. Pale golden with a low white head. Aroma is straw, pilsner-like though a touch of sweetness. Taste the same. Very citric. Fresh though not served very cold.

Pours clear golden with a medium sized white head. Smells of subtle earthy hops and sweet malt. Taste is sweet and bitter, earthy and grainy. Medium-bodied with a slick texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Schlafly Kolsch finishes with a lingering crisp sweetness.

Bottle, shared with Parksy. Medium golden colour. Stinky sulphurous nose, unclean grains. As Parksy put it "this tastes like bad draft". We both dumped our glasses.

Bright yellow color. Some head, a decent sheet of lace. Looks better than your typical Kolsch. Tiny bubbles of carbonation. First sniff is dry, bready English stuff. Has a mild, crisp aroma. The hop is strictly a mild bittering agent. It’s sweet, but try enough to not be sugary. The bready Kolsch style serves this one well. Even more than 6 months old it still smells quite fresh. The "beer" flavor here, if that makes sense, is really strong. It has all the best qualities of a lager at a townie bar, but with only the malt sweetness, and none of the rice and HFCS. The aftertaste is lemon and pollen. The mouthfeel is creamy and lingers a bit, but it’s very smooth and slides down the gullet. This is a year-round beer: smooth enough for the summers but with enough OOMPH for an autumn or winter bender.

Bottle. Golden in color. Small to medium head. Aroma is hay, grass, and a touch of grains. Taste is slightly sweet on the front and just a tad sour in the aftertaste. Maltgrass, straw taste.
