Commercial Description:
This beer is aged on new Missouri oak. The wood has a medium toast, which helps to caramelize the sugars in the oak and adds a nutty character to the beer as it soaks into the wood. Leave the corkscrew in the kitchen drawer and pop open a beer that will reward you with more flavors than most wines can dream of.

Bottle at the Laid Back Brussels Tasting (Feb 9, 2008)
Clear, amber body with an off-white, creamy head. Good lace. ARoma of hops and caramel. Very nice, well balanced and a nice complexity. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour with cinnamon and cumin. Quite nice beer, with an ok complexity and balance.

2006 bottle. Pours a rusty copper tinged brown with a creamy offwhite tan head. The nose is rather odd for the style. Not super sweet or malty and not a ton of oak. Toasty malt and light fruit. Some vanilla and a slight astringency, Medium creamy mouthfeel with low carbonation. Creamy fruity astringency, Not a ton of malt depth. A significant oaky flavor--cherry tinged tannins and vanilla. A little too toasty for my tastes. Alcohol pops out with oak in the finish. Not quite rich or malty enough to meet my expectations of a barleywine, but not a bad amaerican strong ale.

6-27-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to mreusch
Semi clear amber with little head. Smell is alcohol, sweet tomatoes, cinnamon and nutmeg with perhaps a touch of ketchup - each glass we poured it in - it seemed different. Flavor is interesting and has an oak and almost sweet fruity malt backbone. Low to medium carbonation. A little strange but not dreadful

750ml (2006 vintage) from a trade from way back when.....pours a semi-cloudy medium amber brownvwith a thin creamy off-white head..... chewy caramel malt and fruit, not necessarily of the dark variety, and a touch of sour oak and wood but nothing too apparent.... smooth straighforward flavors of fruit and sweet sugars and a little alcohol bitter bite in the finish. silky smooth body that makes drinking it enjoyable. wish the barrel would have been more forward but still pretty nice.

Bottle in trade from mreusch. Thanks!
Pours a medium maroon to amber color with a light beige short lived head. Smell is sweet bourbon, malt, and a touch of cinnamon. Taste is malty, lightly bourbony, vanilla and slight oaky dryness. Bit thin bodied with medium carbonation. Nice drinkability but the flavor falls a bit short of what I hoped for. Still a nice beer.

2006 vintage. Pours a thick and sticky dark russet color with a tight cap of foam. Sheeting action galore inside the glass! Sugary molasses malt aromas, with some alcohol-soaked fruit, pine, and cognac. Boozy flavors with citrus submerged in bourbon. Sticky sweet and lip-smacking good. Warming. One to share.
