Opaque black color with a tan head that lasts about 10 seconds. Slightly fruity aroma. Fairly strong roasted malt aroma. Slightly bready. A touch of smoke in the nose. Great flavor of malt, caramel, roast, smoke. Very creamy, silky mouthfeel. Great flavor in this nice oatmeal stout. Good stuff.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2003 kinda roasty and oaty yet a little sour in the aroma..the color was a not so opaque black with a thin layer of stuff on top..flavor was solid roasty malts..no off flavors at all..tad oatey..some chocolate too and firm & full body...nothing stands out as being too outstanding either, but definitely above average.

Growler: Dark, thick milk chocolate flows from the 1/2 gallon jug. . .a small off white head slowly rises. . .coffee, and burnt roasted malts float to my nose. . .flavours abound toffee, chocolate, big roasted malts. . .a fine stout!

Both sweet and roasty, with hints of chocolate, coffee, oats, oil, smoke and tabacco. Creamy and smooth with nice thickness and mouthfeel. Another pretty good beer from Schlafly.

Revamp: Nice and more nicer. Great roastiness with a smooth body. One of the better, less typical, American made stouts.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2005 Another tasty well balanced brew from this very reliable brewer. Sweet slightly smoky nose, malty and hearty with a smooth finish. Bottled version. Full-bodied and yet very drinkable. Good stuff!

Suprised to see it described as a sweet stout as the sweetness wasn’t very evident. Dark, malty and creamy. Very good! (Draught version)

A little too thin for my tastes. Oatmeal sweetness was not very appearent until the beer warmed up. Beautiful color, nice head and lacking aroma. A decent oatmeal stout.

Very dark with a roasty nose. Charleston Chew thickness, with a rather heavy mouthfeel. Smooth with a low carbonation level. Quite a bit of roast. Mild hops. Some bitterness lingers on the roof of the mouth for some time, and residual bitterness seems to build. 3/4 the way into the sip, it felt very porter-like to me, for some strange reason. Pretty good stout!

2nd Bottle six days later: mmmmm...chocolately! Also, really nice yeast component in the aroma. Up a tiny notch on this wonderful beer! I’m having this bottle at home in better testing conditions (the previous one I had at the office). Original: 8/25/02: Creamy, balanced and just wonderful. Roastiness is perfect, a tiny bit of nut, fruitiness, and big hops at the finish close this thing tremendously. I have to make it down to St. Louis, because on tap (as MaxPower suggests) this could be an all time favorite. Thanks, Max, for sending it to me.
