4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 6, 2004 2003 bottle. Pours a dark greyish-brown but has some softer amber tinges. Good cream colored head. Smells immensely creamy and oaty. Like a bowl of thick creamy oats but also a scent of vanilla. Man I love flaked oats. I enjoyed the aroma so much, that I couldnt stop myself from diving right in to the tasting of this one. And what a flavor. Smooth, creamy, silky. Big oats flavor, vanilla hints, malt in the background. Just incredibly drinkable. I drank this beer in about 2 minutes and immediately wanted another. No trace of alcohol. Not as complex as say Bell’s Double cream, but the oaty goodness is out of this world and the palate could not be any more rich, smooth and balanced.

Pours rich dark mahogany it looks dark brown with a small tan head. Smells strongly of malts and sweet oatmeal. Tastes malty and richly of oatmeal. Full-bodied with a creamy texture and average mouth carbonation, Schlafly Oatmeal Stout finishes smooth with faint dryness.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A deep brown pour with red highlights and frothy tan head. It has a sweet malty aroma with nice roasted notes. The taste is full and creamy with a sweet begining and roasted dry finish. This is my favorite Schlafly brew.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma is roasted malts, grains and a hint of coffee bitterness. The flavor is chocolate/coffee, roasted malts and mild acidity/tartness in the finish, mixed with the malts. Great stout, among Schlafly’s best offerings.

On tap and bottle. I loved this one after not wanting to give it a shot. Dark and full bodied, barley very evident and loads of taste. Had several 6-packs since the Brew Pub sampler tray.

Oatmeal stouts have a way of triggering the pleasure receptors in my brain. I love the balance and sleek feel that they have to offer - well, the good ones, anyway. Schlafly’s oatmeal stout provides all of that. It has a brownish-black body that is surprisingly light, but the blanket of small, tight bubbles creates a lovely head. It’s perfectly smooth and the balance between the chocolate and roasted coffee spice is excellent. Aroma is a little light, but offers an enticing scent of fresh coffee and spicy cocoa. The finish is creamy but also refreshing. These St. Louis brewers clearly have a handle on the style. This beer gives the legendary English oatmeal stouts a run for their money.

A very dark and viscous brown color with a creamy white head. Aroma is roasted and buttery. Sweet malty body with coffee and chocolate finish. Good complexity. Very smooth and robust, a must try if you can get it.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Purchased at Schlafly Taproom in St Louis, MO; enjoyed on a hot Sunday afternoon, the last one of my 20’s (b-day is tomorrow). Appearance is a beautiful pitch black with a creamy tan/chocolatey head. Aroma is fantastic, nice roasted chocolate malts, coffee, lactose, slight nutty, a bit of caramel too, sweet but balanced. Taste is also just like the aroma - fantastic. Very smooth, not too much carbonation, equal caramel and chocolate notes rounded out by the creaminess of lactose and maybe a touch of vanilla. The oats actually do come out in the mix on this one and they’re more apparent than any other OS I’ve had. Did I mention it was smooth? Because after a minute it’s half gone and that bums me out. Fantastic fantastic stuff, will definitely enjoy again!
