This slightly sour Belgian-style beer is aged with real tart cherry puree, the sourness meant to emulate traditional wild-fermented Flanders Brown Ales.

Draft purchased inside right before Hop in the City 2010 started. This was the festival beer, so I wanted to grab a whole one early so I didn’t have to fight the crowds outside for one later. Turned out to be a good call. Pours a cloudy reddish-brown color with a small beige head. Aroma of tart cherries, lightly toasted caramel malts, wood, and subtle spices. Flavor of tart cherries, spices, caramel, vanilla, wood, and mineral notes. Medium-bodied, with mild carbonation and a mildly sour mouthfeel. Schlafly’s first attempt at a sour is an admirable one, as this is a sessionable, drinkable example of the style that I would use as a gateway for those trying a sour for the first time.

Rating from mid-Nov. Deep brown with a nice ruby/garnet highlight. Very creamy off-white head with a modest height. Nice caramel nose with a strong sweetness, staw, mild barnyard notes, light raisin, slight cherry and light grainy presence at the end. Taste starts with a smooth barnyard funk early that moves over to a smooth caramel middle with fruity notes of cherry and raisins with a semi-tart finish at the end. Body has a modest fullness and a dry puckering end. Overall a very odoriferous and tasty brew. Finish is light and adds to the sweet malt and estery notes but not overpowering. Good brew.

8/11/12. GTMW - served up as "Oud Bruin Sour Brown." Amber pour with a small khaki head. Light funk and tart cherries in the aroma with hints of caramel and malt as well as a touch of vinegar, wood, and vanilla. Lightly funky and tart flavor with sweet cherries, some wood and cream/vanilla, and more. More of a promising aroma than flavor.

Tasted 10/4/10. Pint from the Tap Room. Filtered with a dark amber hue. Lacing light khaki head. Floral and perfumy head. Aromas of cooked sugar and a nice berry undertone. Medium bodied with a very lively palate. Tart, tangy and sour. It hits all of the palate. Flavors of tart cherries and cranberries. Mildly earthy with a dash of pepper and a slight vanilla sweetness. Grape candy flavors. Really nice complexity of the flavors and the body. Good mouthfeel and somewhat vinuous. Good first attempt.

Had a glass of this at Schlafly’s Tap Room. Thanks to Vyvvy for adding it here. This style is definitely not a favored one for me but this offering was very nice. Even I liked it. Dark reddish brown with a one finger tan head. Nice spider web lacing. Flavor was light sourness and deep resonant dark fruit. Flavor was also lightly sour with that delicious fruit. On occasion plums would just jump out and cherries were steady. Nice caramel and some interesting complexity.

On tap, Schlafly Tap House. Dark chestnut with a medium off-white head. Strange nose: tropical flowers, roasted malt and malt vinegar acids - seems almost like a meat marinade. Flavor is moderately sour with medium sweetness underneath - here I pick up some sour cherries, vanilla malts and almonds. I pick up a bit of coffee grounds as it warms a bit. Moderately carbonated with a slick mouthfeel. Interesting...

Growler shared by Bill, thanks Bill. Color is dark brown with faint ruby hues and pours with a small head. The beer is coffee-earthiness, some vegetal malts, and a ground-soil character. Its not sour but an earthy version of the style.

A-Funky barnyard, hay, sour. A- hazy brown with very small trace of head. Tart, sour, some slight caramel, hay. P-surprisingly crisp with lots of fizzy pop from dryness.

2010 Hop in the City festival beer - Pours clear brown with a reddish hue and a beige head. The aroma has light sourness, cherries, light must and a hint of spice. Medium crisp body that is a bit grainy and it has restrained carbonation. The flavor starts with some mineral/medicinal traits followed by some light cherry, a bit of tin, some pepper and an expected thin malt presence. The finish has the same with a hint of caramel and some pennies. This is okay for Schlafly’s first attempt at a sour, but no way this is up with established examples of sour ales. However, this is a line priced beer on tap, so dollar for dollar value is decent.
