COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Porter is a dark ale with a mild roasted character and a distinct sweetness from caramel malt. This medium-bodied porter has a velvety body with Pilgrim hops adding a subtle bitterness and East Kent Goldings hops adding aroma and flavor. The English yeast helps showcase all of these flavors in this traditional British-style porter.

In 18th Century London, the word porter was first used to describe a relatively strong, dark beer, popular amongst the working class. London brewers became famous for this style, as they began refining the process using better quality malt. The World Wars led to a higher tax on malt, resulting in lower alcohol strengths in porters. Porter nearly disappeared in the late 20th Century, but was re-introduced in London after small American brewers revitalized interest in the style.

(This beer is a little old.) First of all, the appearance of this brew is a dark brown color with almost no head, and the aroma is reminiscent of roasted malts and bread yeast. The taste is slightly sweet, slightly umami, and slightly bitter, and the mouthfeel combines a medium body, thin and slick texture, soft carbonation, and a long finish.

Bottle - fair size foamy head, very dark amber almost black color, roasted malt aroma and flavor, fair chocolate notes, not much coffee at all so that is too for me ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aug 2012 bottle to a tulip glass. Pours a dark black/brown with red highlight. Aroma is a roasty malt with spy sauce and a faint sweetness. Strong roasted taste that almost overpowers the malt. Savory with a little soy sauce and no discernible sweetness. The hops is balanced well but still detect a bit of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel with good carbonation. The roastiness is too strong for my taste but still drinkable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: very dark brown, with beautiful clear ruby highlights against the light; creamy light tan head clinging to the sides of the glass as it shrinks slowly. Aroma: bittersweet dark chocolate, black bread, toffee, cream, and caramel, with a hint of wet stone. Taste: roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, and chalk dust. Finish: dry as talc, with a light lingering roast flavor. Notes: Very nice palate on this one; light enough to be drinkable, but thick enough to carry the roasty flavors you’d expect from a top-notch porter. The only downside to this was the slightly too-strong chalky/dusty flavor, which is fine (or enjoyable even) in a porter if restrained a little more than it was here.

Nice deep dark brown coloured body, similar to cola with a caramel glow at the bottom and a very thin, half a centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pale malt, tons of nuts, mushrooms, earth, toffee and a bit of peanut butter. Light to Medium-bodied; Very earthy, nutty flavour with a hint of smoked peat, some light caramel and sweet flavours, but mainly a subdued malty flavour with a little sweetness and not much else. Aftertaste shows some lactic vibes, a hint of caramel and toffee and quite a bit of peanuts, walnuts and earthiness. Overall, a decent porter, but perhaps a bit disappointed, given the great pedigree of the brewery. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 04-January-2013 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 01-February-2013.

Pours almost black with a reddish tint when held up to the light. Small khaki head dissipated fairly quickly but left a few lines of soapy lacing. The aroma was very chocolaty. A nice sweet aroma but not too complex. Taste was chocolate and roasted malts. There was a very light hint of hops in the background that gave it a pretty good balance. The body was pretty light with a bit of a slick feel.

Bottle. Pours dark carmel. The aroma is strong roasted flavor. The taste is a little light and I get some dried fruits out of the taste. Not a bad porter, a little different than your typical one. It is kinda lacking flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
