Schlafly Quadrupel is, as its name implies, a serious beer. But don’t be intimidated. This fourth beer in our bottle-conditioned Belgian-style beer series has a rich, malty backbone that is generously balanced by select, fresh hops to create a luscious, smooth character. Sharing it with friends enhances the enjoyment, whether in front in front of a roaring fire or at the finest dinner party. Quadrupel will be available year-round, but in limited quantities, with the initial batch being 150 cases.

750ml bottle, aged for about one year. Lightly sweet, bready, fruity, floral aroma, with notes of apricot, orange, melon, toasty malts, doughy yeast, toffee and faint spice. Dark fiery amber color with a lasting, pillowy, ivory head. Flavor is predominantly sweet and malty, with suggestions of brown sugar, faint cocoa, estery yeast, dried pineapple, green grape, nut, dried herbs, mild spicy bitterness and just a hint of alcohol towards the finish. Very smooth with a creamy effervescence on the palate and a touch of lingering warmth, with a hugely full body. A bit unconventional but perhaps the best Old World similarity would be that of De Koenigshoeven. Really pretty nicely done overall, however.

Bottle:   Fiery caramel, hazy, moderate frothy off-white head, nice lacing.   Odd its not darker...   Strong fruity aroma, some pineapple and starfruit, among some apple/pear skin.   Odd that its not really fruity in the date/fig/raisin that most Quads are.   Bright breadiness and yeasty aspects, unripened pale fruit, and a good abundance of heat on this one.   Almost has more in common with Tripels and strong Belgian Goldens than it does a Quad.   Sticky, full bodied.   Sticky sweet yeastiness on the finish.   Yeah, its like an Uber Strong Golden/Pale.   Quad... not in color or flavor.   Enjoyable, just not really to style.   I nursed this one for a while, otherwise could get too sickly sweet for just one person.   Thanks doc fabulous for the bottle!   Its a sipper!

750ml bottle Pours a hazed, deep auburn-amber colored body with a finger-width, frothy, light tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is fruity and yeasty with a good amount of caramel and toffee. Some alcohol, cherries, raisins, other dark fruits, pepper, clove, toasty nuts, a hint of candi sugar, and a touch of orange-apricot-citrus. Flavor is more the same. Lots of fruity, yeasty, sweet malts with plenty of caramel and toffee. Dark fruits, some bread, candi sugar, apricots, clove, a soft pepper, some citrus, and a light, but noticeable alcohol. Finishes malty sweet with a light bread and somewhat yeasty with a light, spicy bitterness. Some alcohol warmth before a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, somewhat sticky body with a higher carbonation. Overall, a nice quad. Fairly sweet and fruity, but a solid yeasty, spicy, light hopping to balance.

750 mL bottle. Pours a hazy orange red with long-lasting khaki head. The aroma is toffee and caramel with some musty notes, cherry, prune, clove, rotting banana, orange, and toasted pecans. The flavor is rich with caramel and slight toffee. It is definitely on the sweet side, but is kept in check by some earthy hops and spicy yeast notes. Some leather, clove, and orange zest notes catch my attention. The finish is bready and semi-sweet. There is a little bit of alcohol warmth in the aftertaste, but it is very well masked. Not bad.

Draft sample at Hop in the City 2010. Pours a cloudy gold color with a small bone white head. Aroma of sweet malts, toffee, peppery spice, alcohol, nectarines, apricots, and candi sugar. Flavor of caramel, sweet malts, yeast, alcohol, apricots, candi sugar, and citrus. Medium-full bodied, with a syrupy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Pretty damn sweet and malty. Reminded me almost of an amped-up tripel.

750 bottle bought at the Tap Room. Reddish brown doesn’t quite describe the appearance but it is the best I can do. A decent tan head. So much alcohol in this beer! Flavor is very big fruit. It is something between citrus and dark. Prunes, and plums, but so much more. Nice malt and some yeast along with that fruit. That big alcohol is tasted throughout. I wish it were much smaller. Flavor is sometimes prickly and sometimes powdery. That fruit sells this beer. It is so tasty!

75cl traded bottle. Pours a muddy, lighter brown color with a large khaki head that dissolves into a film. Pretty big aroma that I expect from a quad but also some sour cherry notes. Pretty hot flavor initially but it mellows out with some molasses and malt. The 12 ABV is pretty noticeable and drags this down a bit.

Nice strong head of medium sized but very dense bubbles. Sweet malty aroma with some caramel, oranges, spices and a bit of alcohol. Color is a slightly hazy dark orange. Rich and sweet flavor with lots of caramel, butterscotch, spices and BIG alcohol punch. A typical quad like flavor. Lots of flavor and somewhat thick palate. Finishes sweet and spicey with a lingering alcohol warming. A pretty good quad.

Opaque amber with a thin bone colored head, with nice lacing . Aroma is apples, spices, and stone fruits with a strong alcohol aroma as it warms. Taste is boozy fruit with a tiny bit of dark roasted malt. Carbonation is fine and spot on. Finishes clean with a perfumey lingering alcohol. $8/750
