Schlafly Quadrupel is, as its name implies, a serious beer. But don’t be intimidated. This fourth beer in our bottle-conditioned Belgian-style beer series has a rich, malty backbone that is generously balanced by select, fresh hops to create a luscious, smooth character. Sharing it with friends enhances the enjoyment, whether in front in front of a roaring fire or at the finest dinner party. Quadrupel will be available year-round, but in limited quantities, with the initial batch being 150 cases.

Super-dry, with pit fruits and warming malts. Long on the palate, totally in balance, and the freshness of the flavors came to mind as I carefully sipped at this one. Not bright, hi-liter esters awash in alcohol, but fresh, well-crafted, and carefully-constructed. Perfect precursor to a rich Thanksgiving dinner. I have high standards for American versions of Belgian styles, but this quad is distinctly American without losing any of the careworn aspects of the style that make it so special. Really well done.

THOUGHTS: Sort of straddles the line between an abt and a quad. It could have had a slight infection, but I think it was just the sherry-like aspect of it fooling me, but there was a slight sour or tartness to it. Either way it was very good. Very complex. Fruity in many different ways. Way better than I imagined it would be. I highly recommend it. TECHNICAL: Drank 4/28/2013. Bottle. Poured a medium orangey amber, which borders on brown in the glass when held out of the light. It had a small, fizzy, tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma had heavy caramel, molasses and burnt caramel; light citrus hops; light to moderate yeast; grape raisin, plum, prune, apple pear, peach, pineapple, cherry; honey brown sugar, alcohol; dark fruits and lightly fruits alike; and dark candy sugar. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderately sweet and lightly acidic and sour with a long duration. There was caramel, molasses, honey, brown sugar, prune, raisin, plum, peach, pear, alcohol, dark candy sugar, pineapple, apple, cherry, cranberry and moderate yeast. The slightly more than medium body might have been thicker but the carbonation made it seem lighter. It was a little oily and then slightly dry with rather fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish.

750mL, just capped, Bottled with love on 6 1313, so a full year ago. Nose huge in ark caramel, fudge, plums, huge raisins, lighter red berry, sweet and thorough. Pours hazy dark chestnut with a rocky beige head. Medium body very malty with a lot of booze, some heat but a little firmer in fusels and stingers on the tongue; average carbonation but alcohol and lightly tart malt make it very aggressively crisp. Brown sugar caramel, and really dirty, humus-rich earth, long-lasting with a bit of wheaty slime, very rich. Some acetone and busted wild phenolics that are out of control, but match the pinned-back ears of the rest. I’m OK with it, but it’s very brash and rough around the edges.

This is a red brown beer w/ a ring of head. It has a fruity cherry nose w/ a bit of banana to it. It is big and heavy and quite sweet. The finish is earthy bitterness. I found even a small pour of this rather hard to get through.

Draft on tap at RBSG Brewers Dinner at Dressels (St. Louis, MO). Pours a deeper amber brown hue, good deeper hazy dark middle with some gentle orange glow on the edges with frothy offwhite head, mellow tannish ring that sits atop and laces small. Aromas are richer, nice carmelized and dark fruit, touches of plum, caramel and gentle spiciness. Mellow Belgian yeast, some gentle prune and plum, gentle warmth. Initial is fuller bodied showing caramel and plum. Gentle yeastiness, faint spice hits with A firm warmth as it goes down the throat. Middle is a bit toasty, carmelized and caramel. Backend is a bit spicy, warm with touches of plum, touches of toast and gentle faint vanilla. Mellow dark fruit, plum and gentle yeastiness, mellow warmth finishes us out. Tasty, a bit big but really well done. Yeast and fermentation is on point. Not my style but a very nice beer.
