Fielding (58) - - OCT 21, 2012
Aroma of raspberry and bitter chocolate, but not even a hint of coffee. Smells reminiscent of german chocolate cake with a raspberry drizzle. My expectations were dashed. Initial flavors of tart raspberries followed by a chocolatey bitterness. Watery coffee flavors from the watery coffee masters. Better coffee beans to start would likely lead to a masterful Raspberry Coffee Stout 2.0.

Bottle shared during the RBESG 2014 London Grand Tasting - Moncada Brewery. Pours deep brown with a frothy, beige head. It has raspberry essence throughout, with moderate roasted malts and earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately chocolatey on the finish with some sweet raspberry accents. Nice.

RBESG pt 18. Moncada. Grand Tasting. Opaque dark brown beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Palate is light and dry. Mild fine carbonation. Unsweet raspberry over very mild dark malts. Touch of floralness. Crisp dry finish. Sounded interesting but missed the mark for me.

Bottle at RBESG 2014 Grand Tasting. It pours dark brown with small light tan head. The nose is sweet rapsberry, strawberry ice-cream, red fruits and light roast. The taste is bitter-sweet, toasty, coffee, tart raspberry, creamy, wood, roasted malt, ash and burnt wood with a dry finish. Medium-full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Decent balance. Solid.

750 mL bottle. Pours a deep brown with a medium-sized tan head and aromas of coffee, faint fruit. As it pours I could see there is a reddish hue to the color in the light, but in a full glass you can’t tell. Flavor swirls around a bit... sometimes it is very raspberry heavy, other times it is very stouty and chocolatey. Body and mouthfeel are both medium and it has pretty lively carbonation. I hoped this would be solid like this, but feared it could be a cloying and awful mess. It’s good!

Bottle: Thanks, Jason. Deep brown, not quite black, topped with an off-beige head that wastes no time receding to a thin collar. Aroma has light raspberry purée, just a touch jammy with timid notes of dry cocoa & faint must underneath. Not getting much coffee from the nose. Taste also is more chocolate than coffee, with some mildly milky, sweet chocolate; again, some raspberry purée & jam notes swim throughout, leading into a moderately roasted malt finish with a light, but notable astringency. Where’s the coffee? Kind of mellow all around, still an enjoyable beer (but I’m biased towards raspberries) but my hopes were a touch higher.
