This beer is aged on new Missouri oak. The wood has a medium toast, which helps to caramelize the sugars in the oak and adds a nutty character to the beer as it soaks into the wood. Leave the corkscrew in the kitchen drawer and pop open a beer that will reward you with more flavors than most wines can dream of.

Pours a nice brown with a medium offwhite head that sticks to the side of the glass. Nose is of caramel and green hops, typical american barleywine. Taste is surprisingly not too sweet and offers a ton of oak and some caramel. Alcohol is warming but I find it to be fitting. Body is full, carbonation moderate. Mouthfeel is sticky. Good barleywine, really well executed.

This beer is a clear orangeish garnet with a small, creamy off-white head, and the aroma blends dark fruit, alcohol that is slightly solventy, caramel malts, and oak notes. The taste is complex with slight bitterness, mild sweetness, slight umami, and touch of sourness with definite oakiness, but the finish is decidedly boozy and astringent; there is also a slick texture, average carbonation with a bite, medium-full body, and a long and warm aftertaste.

Bottle - Ruby amber with a light tan ring of head. Nose is lightly sweet, lightly bitter malt, with a mellow oakiness and a boozy warmth. Taste is dry, malty readiness with a light oakiness and a bit of cherry sweetness. Medium, a bit slick with mellow carbonation.

2008 Vintage. Pours a rich copper color with a finger of gaseous eggshell foam. Lots of burnt sugar, spicy oak and layers of dates, vanilla, and toffee. Lots of carbonation keeps the mouthfeel from being overly sticky and the sweetness is pretty well balanced with the heavy spicy oak influence.

750ml bottle into a wine glass. A: Pours a very hazy dark brown color. There’s about one finger of off-white colored head that retains itself superbly given the strength. Not much lacing is left behind, though. S: This is very woody, especially when it warms up. Before that, it’s dominated by a ton of fruitiness - mainly cherries, figs, and raisins. There’s also a leathery undercurrent. It’s a bit simple for a barleywine, but it’s quite solid otherwise. It becomes quite good when it opens up sufficiently, hence the semi-high score. T: It starts off dominated by toasted oak. It finishes with a lot of oak flavor, too. Sandwiched between all the woodiness lies some decent dark fruit flavors in the middle. Another great feature is that it strikes a great balance between being not sweet and being not alcoholic. In fact, the finish is a touch bitter. It really improves once it warms up, but its lack of depth prevents me from giving it a 4+. M: Soft, creamy, but a bit too carbonated. Again, any problems from the feel can be alleviated by just letting it sit: it loses its carbonation and improves in flavor. While it finishes dry, it still has a long, caramel-laden finish. Make no mistake, this is quite dangerous: there’s no booze to get in the way of just sipping the hell out of this. O: Upon first sips, it was about a 3.25: serviceable, but far from great. Let it reach room temperature, and it becomes a 3.75: not quite legendary, but incredibly good. For that reason, I’d gladly drink it again, and I might even buy another bottle if I see it on the shelf.

’11 bottle. Murky caramel pour with no head. Oak with raisin, toasted malt, darker fruit and plum, and light alcohol in the aroma. Heavy dark fruit with raisin and light char with alcohol in the taste. Coasting mouthfeel. Decent.

Draft at the 4th Annual Mad Fox Barleywine Fest (Sunday). Poured a slightly hazy light ruby color with a small white head. Aroma was dominated by vanilla and woody oak notes. Boozy sweet caramel malts, touch of light pine. Flavor was sweet, dried fruit, with caramel, pine, and oak notes. Easy drinking. If you got a bottle, prepare to share.

750ml bottle: 2010 vintage. This one pours a hazy coppery color. Pretty much no head on it. This has a really nice nose. It’s got a bit of caramel malt, some vanilla, oak and some fruitiness also. The taste is also very good. It has a subdued sweetness from the caramel malt, notes of the vanilla, oak, some faint cherry. This is really an excellent barleywine.
