3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours fairly brown with very slight light tan head. Aroma is mostly oak, some grapefruity hops, and cooked sugars. Thereís some fruit and hops in the flavor, but the alcohol warmth and oak makes this seem more like booze than beer. Its not a bad drink. Maybe it could improve with time. But for now, go with the BA Imp Stout.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a medium dark orangey brown with a decent lingering head. Smells of candy (caramel, brown sugar, raisin), citrusy hops, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet and spicy, with a noticeable alcohol zing. Thereís more dark toffee and molasses in the flavor, with plenty of grapefruity hops to back it up. The alcohol in the middle gives it a sort of volatile, almost "mixed drink" flavor, but itís not that offensive. Thereís more alcohol flavor than Iíd like, but itís not all that bad. There are other strong tastes to concentrate on.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750ml bottle. Rating the last 4-5oz of the bottle, the first part helped me clean the kitchen, load the dishwasher, and make a 1000ml yeast starter. Pours reddish copper with a small, off-white head. Aroma is oak, raisins, brown sugar, oakish vanilla, and some bright notes, almost like distilled lemon wine. Taste is oak (it is forward, but non-agressive like the rest of the beer), alcohol, caramel, and tannic. Another Schlafly wood aged beer that is not outstanding, but very drinkable. The light flavored base barleywine seems to dance gracefully with the dominant, but non-overpowering oak barrel flavor.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2008 Pours a dark amber color with a minimal but lingering and glass-coating tan head. A soft aroma of bourbon and spice. Sweet toasted malt flavor along with vanilla and bourbon. Very warming and pleasant; alcohol is smooth and inoffensive. An excellent barleywine on a par with the original Schlafly product, though smoother and more velvety.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
draft, served in a stemmed snifter at the Schlafly Tap Room. floral nose with a hint of mediciney malt. color is a dark amber brown with a small but very creamy looking tan head which faded to spotty lace. flavor is nicely balanced and made for a great sipper of a drink while sitting at the bar with illini08. main drawback was the near lack of oak flavor, however it did have a nice buttery vanilla texture from the barrel it had a dry, bitter finish and hints of the medine flavor was lurking in the background, but was not much of a distraction. I really enjoyed this and considered getting a second glass, but instead went for some of the other tap brews. good stuff!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
The barleywine was much more well balanced and hopped than the previous raters indicate. Maybe it had something to do with the fact I had a bottle of Groth and a Belgian Tripel beforehand, but the very floral and well spiced aroma and malty sweetness of the beer actually surprised me. drmatt gave me lower expectations than I had previously had for the b-wine, but I must say that we were both surprised when we shared a couple of bottles at the Taproom. I think a re-rate is in order.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2006 this is not the same recipe as their regular barleywine. the other taste like tcoa, this taste englishy, plus oak. i had really high expectations for this, but i am not impressed. rerate: so maybe my first bottle was a bad one. this did have a nice maltiness that i did not taste the first time. i guess that it was the same recipe as the regular b-wine with the oak, obviously. i did actually taste the hops in this one as well, even in the burp.
rerate: i had this for a 2nd time at the tap room. this time i could taste a nice maltiness and some hops unlike the first time. i donít know if it was the bottle on the first try or what i had before it, but this was much better. i was not going to buy a case of this, but after last night i definitely will.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pour is a very clear brown with a fizzy white head. Aroma is very sweet with notes of some malts and a heavy dose of alcohol. Flavor is super sweet with some smokyness and again the alcohol kicks in. Not really a barleywine at all. Way to sweet to the point of almost being hard to drink. Hops are almost a non factor. Iíll finish the bottle since i paid for it but canít really recommend it.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 bottle-hmm, i dunno about this one. Im kinda dissapointed. The imperial stout is pretty damn nice, but this falls short. pours clear amber with a small rocky off-white head. nose is somewhat subdued-light oak, woodsy, malty, candy sugar, tannens but something isnt there. its not bad, but its missing something-ohh, yea I know what it is....HOPS! This thing is way over the top sweet with some light vanilla flavors. However, the flavor takes a dive-it starts tasting plastic-like with very little complexity. The palate is way thin, especailly for a 10.2. really falls short on the mouthfeal. finish is very sweet with lingering oak, but really dosnt do much in terms of grabbing you. becomes cloying and tiresome over the corse of a bottle. Im not that impressed.
