COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is aged on new Missouri oak. The wood has a medium toast, which helps to caramelize the sugars in the oak and adds a nutty character to the beer as it soaks into the wood. Leave the corkscrew in the kitchen drawer and pop open a beer that will reward you with more flavors than most wines can dream of.

November 16, 2012 bottle from Wine and Cheese in STL. Light brown pour with some head. Aroma was caramel, wood, bread, alcohol. Taste was predominantly wood with some nutty and caramel. Very slight alcohol in the finish, but for over 10% this hides it very well. 2011 bottle.

appearance: slightly murky, reddish copper, one finger of creamy tan head shrinking to a thin collar. aroma: treacle, vanilla, coffee, molasses, toasted wood. taste: sweet, with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisin, wood, and a hint of bourbon. finish: very smooth, lingering sweetness, a subtle slow heat building. notes: Very good barleywine; malt heavy of course, and doesn’t have a lot of the very strong hopping that some US versions seem to employ. Enjoyable. 2012 Vintage courtesy of Zoltan.

Got this in a trade with gregwilsonstl...Pours a dark golden brown with fluffy head. Aromas of dark malts, hops, and light bourbon. Flavors of sweet malts, hops, and nice bourbon notes. Thanks Greg

Bottle. Clear amber pour, thin beige head. Aroma is quite fruity, caramel, tropical, plum, ripe fruits and some sugar. Flavor is sweet, heavy malts, nice spicy bitterness and smooth vanilla oak. Lovely balance, heavy brew.

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. The pour was a ruby-brown gem (haha) with a nice small egg shell colored head. The aroma is heavy on caramel with a little woodiness and a bit of dark fruit. It’s pretty plain. The flavor mimics it. The malts and barrel kind of fight over a dominating flavor with the fruits taking a back seat. The mouth feel is a little thin and oily with a sporadic carbonation that I think might be a bit too forceful. The aftertaste is lightly bitter with a touch of vanilla. It’s not bad by any means, but this one could be a lot better

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish red pour with khaki colored head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramel, oak, and vanilla into some brown sugar, touch of dark fruit into a bit of earthy notes into a bit of yeast. Taste was a nice mix of grass, bread and toast into caramel, vanilla, oak with some dark fruit, finishing sweet.

2013 bottle from Bruisin. Deep mahogany pour with a small off white head. Aroma was sweet caramel malts, vanilla, touch of oak, candied fig. Flavors were in line with lots of caramel, bittersweet fruits, more vanilla and an oaky finish. Plus mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter woody finish, more vanilla. Really tasty Barleywine. Man I love this style.

2009 Bottle ordered online from Missouri. A: Dark mahogany color with a creme colored head that sits and stays. Some lacing - not as much as I’d like from a barleywine. N: Toffee, caramel, some soy, oak, vanilla, a hint of oxidation, burnt brown sugar, hazelnut and walnut. Toast and some licorice. Hops lend a peppercorn and citrus element - not in an intense amount, but just enough to be noticed. T: Very sweet, with an oaky bitterness that lends balance without taking down the English barleywine character. M: Heavy body, creamy carbonation, alcohol is there but restrained. O: A refined barleywine that has aged very well, (My memory of it as fresh was that it is quite hot and unbalanced). If you have the cellar space, this seems to be one to lay down.

Huge oak in this. Bigger than the beer. If you want a glass full of barrel, this is your thing. Or maybe just order a whiskey. Pours reddish amber with ok head and lacing. Finishes with oaky bitterness. A hint of caramelized malt behind the oak. Tap at Scion.
