3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2014 Edit: 2012 bottle was considerably more enjoyable. Not as bitter in the aftertaste as 2009 vintage.
2009 vintage opened New Yearís Eve 2012. I opened this bottle with an open mind thinking I might actually like it. It was fine except for the bitter finish. That killed it for me and turned me off to it. I poured the balance of the bottle down the sink. I have the new 2012 vintage now in the cellar aging. Hopefully it will be an improvement from the 2009.

Bottle. Clear amber pour, thin beige head. Aroma is quite fruity, caramel, tropical, plum, ripe fruits and some sugar. Flavor is sweet, heavy malts, nice spicy bitterness and smooth vanilla oak. Lovely balance, heavy brew.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travisís house on February 21. The pour was a ruby-brown gem (haha) with a nice small egg shell colored head. The aroma is heavy on caramel with a little woodiness and a bit of dark fruit. Itís pretty plain. The flavor mimics it. The malts and barrel kind of fight over a dominating flavor with the fruits taking a back seat. The mouth feel is a little thin and oily with a sporadic carbonation that I think might be a bit too forceful. The aftertaste is lightly bitter with a touch of vanilla. Itís not bad by any means, but this one could be a lot better

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish red pour with khaki colored head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, caramel, oak, and vanilla into some brown sugar, touch of dark fruit into a bit of earthy notes into a bit of yeast. Taste was a nice mix of grass, bread and toast into caramel, vanilla, oak with some dark fruit, finishing sweet.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
2013 bottle from Bruisin. Deep mahogany pour with a small off white head. Aroma was sweet caramel malts, vanilla, touch of oak, candied fig. Flavors were in line with lots of caramel, bittersweet fruits, more vanilla and an oaky finish. Plus mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Slightly bitter woody finish, more vanilla. Really tasty Barleywine. Man I love this style.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2009 Bottle ordered online from Missouri.
A: Dark mahogany color with a creme colored head that sits and stays. Some lacing - not as much as Iíd like from a barleywine.
N: Toffee, caramel, some soy, oak, vanilla, a hint of oxidation, burnt brown sugar, hazelnut and walnut. Toast and some licorice. Hops lend a peppercorn and citrus element - not in an intense amount, but just enough to be noticed.
T: Very sweet, with an oaky bitterness that lends balance without taking down the English barleywine character.
M: Heavy body, creamy carbonation, alcohol is there but restrained.
O: A refined barleywine that has aged very well, (My memory of it as fresh was that it is quite hot and unbalanced). If you have the cellar space, this seems to be one to lay down.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Huge oak in this. Bigger than the beer. If you want a glass full of barrel, this is your thing. Or maybe just order a whiskey. Pours reddish amber with ok head and lacing. Finishes with oaky bitterness. A hint of caramelized malt behind the oak. Tap at Scion.

Pours a nice clear dark amber. Great sweet corn syrup aromas, caramel, vanilla, dried fruit. Beautiful vanilla and oak flavours, sweet and syrupy. Fabulous. One of the best barley wines Iíve had in recent memory.
