COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

On tap at Pour House. Black pour, nice foamy white head. Not much in the aroma but slight roast. Taste is nice roast, black strap molasses, and a sharp bourbon note. Decent.

On tap at flying squirrel with Germans. Great stout. Bourbon aroma and finish. Very smooth. Best bourbon barrel stout I've had. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

’11 bottle. Black pour with a scattering of tan bubbles on the edge of the glass. Aggressive, semi-hot bourbon with vanilla on the aroma with some chocolate and darker fruit malt underneath. Subtle coconut as it warms. Taste is bourbon with vanilla and light oak followed by a relatively unassertive imperial stout that presents with some chocolate and heavier, dark malt flavors followed by alcohol bitterness. Oddly light mouthfeel. Below average barrel aged imperial stout.

Bottle (2007): pours dark black with a thick tan head, aroma is malty, roasty, chocolate, boozy, taste is malty, very little sweetness, very smooth, some of the bourbon flavor is there but it has mellowed out. Probably one of the better aged stouts I have had. Held up really well.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2014 Nice stout. Great vanilla caramel smell. Good amount of foam and carbonation. Alcohol taste is very present. Taste is roasty, alcohol, slight vanilla and Chocolate, bourbon, in that order. Nice. However, the beer has an oaky, weird, roasty slightly sour aftertaste, not good. Also a bit too thin.

Bottle. Chocolate, bourbon, malt, and herbal hops aroma. Black with small head. Sweet bourbon, chocolate malt, alcohol, and lightly bitter herbal flavor. Nice.

Pours black with a beige head into a snifter. Good head, not a whole lot of lacing. Aroma is of some bourbon, faint roasted malts and strangely a metallic smell is in there. Roasted malts and bourbon are first on the palate. Finished out with more bourbon, faint chocolate and vanilla, and a little hint of metallic ness that I smelled in the aroma. Pretty good. Really smooth and thick mouthfeel. Great for the style. Pretty good. Wish the bourbon came through a little more and the metallic aroma and faint taste was a little off putting. Could be just spoiled on bourbon aged beers due to my tastings of BCB Barleywine last night. Good beer though.

750mL bottle, this one sat apparently too long, it was starting to oxidize and get a bit thin in the body, slight hints of metal too.. not much bourbon flavor almost not vanilla or woodiness.

2011 bottle, poured into a pint glass. Despite the age, very little funk. I would get it a bit every now and then but for the most part it wasn't a big contributor. The bourbon integration was also a bit rough. The beer carried a certain boozy sharpness from the bourbon that wasn't melded well into the stout. It lacked the sophisticated barrel aging of say a Firestone Walker. Despite not reaching those heights, it was still good and smooth drinking with a nice balanced flavor within the stout itself. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rated on 12-09-2009 (Bottle) This beer forms a small tan head that mostly diminishes, opaque body, suspended carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The Aroma is caramel malt, chocolate, nutty, oak, and alcohol. The Taste is sweet, malty, chocolate, nutty, oak, and alcohol. The Palate is tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. Overall, this is a very quaffable beer, nice beer on a cold, windy winter evening, worth trying, and a beer I would drink again.
