COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2007 Rerate, 750mL bottle, 2006 bottle at the Brick, shared with Stine. Pours a dark brownish-black color, with a decent perimeter of transparent yellowish brown; light tan head with decent fine-bubbled lacing. The barrel presence in this is pretty nice; very prominent vanilla and toasty oak (similar to OA Yeti in this sense), some milk chocolate and soft bourbon in the aroma. Some sharp bourbon and alcohol at the tip of the tongue; medium-to-full mouthfeel; milk chocolate and roasted malt core; nicely integrated with a vanilla-forward barrel presence; warm, generous, and reasonably well-integrated; definitely generous with the vanilla, and the bourbon character shows more prominently as it warms. Generous, toasty. Lengthy, toasted bourbon, vanilla, and slightly buttery finish. 8.3.8.3.15=3.7.

750mL bottle, 2006 bottle, courtesy of willblake @ BCTC 2007. Thanks, Jon! Pours a medium brown color; light tan head with fine-bubbled lacing. Bourbon and dried dark fruits in the aroma; some sour-mash character. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: dense toasty vanilla and sour-mash bourbon; toasty oaky wood character filling out the palate; kind of light for a bourbon imperial stout; dense, chewy dried fruit coming through as well. Lengthy, dried fruit and sour mash finish. 7.4.7.3.13=3.4.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2007 Sample from a 2006 bottle. Thanks to willblake. Pours with only a thin film, has the appearance of cola bubbles. The nose I don’t think I’m into at all, a bit of some spoiled lactic and butter whiskey notes – this is the bourbon I don’t like in my stout. Vinous on the palate, with roasted peanuts and chocolate covered crackers. Sharp and moderately boozy, rough and dry oak hits the tongue, and then finishes with a dry flavor of ashy crackers and pasty oak wood.

Sampled at RBSG Grand Tasting room. From a 750ml bottle, pours a clear dark brown brew with a thin tan head that quickly dissolves. Aroma of milk chocolate and caramel malt, bourbon whiskey, with some vanilla. Taste is medium bodied, very low carbonation with flavors of molasses, caramel and bourbon. Finish is sweet, a little alcoholic, with some sweet chocolate aftertaste.

Bottle provided by Paul at a recent beerinatior gathering. Pour was dark brown with some garnet around the edges. Nose is chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and roasted malts. Flavor is very smooth for a bourbon stout which I appreciate. I thought this was very well done and the alcohol well hidden. Yum. This one stood out amonng the 10+ imperial stouts we tasted last night.

RBSG ’07. Caramelly, rich aroma. Very dark, reddish black body with a large bubble head. Like many of the beers I sampled later in the evening during RBSG, this beer was too warm. Sweet. not all that rich. Several years ago at the Great Taste of the Midwest in Madison, Schlafly drew a lot of attention from fest goers. However, like most of their beers this one is nothing fabulous.

2006 Bottle from Beerdrenched; Thanks Eric! Waited a long time to drink this one! Odeed made me do it! Rating #1200 Nose was woody, with coffee, chocolate, and light bourbon and molasses notes; clear dark brown (lighter than expected) with a small, but lightly glass-lacing, tan head; Flavor of chocolate, bourbon (but not too much), dates, oak, and some light vanilla from the medium body and a light bourbon finish!

2006 vintage. Moderate brown color with yellow at the dges. Some alcohol in the aroma tends to dominate the more sublte flavors. In the mouth the bourbon notes hit. Average to below average BA Impy. Some roast in the finish, but....

RBSG 2007, 2006 vintage. Thanks to JPDIPSO for this one. The beer pours to a dark brown body with a thin tan head. The aroma is sweet chocolate sauce and syrup. Vanilla and chocolate malt. The flavor is sweet chocolate syrup, milk chocolate, and vanilla. Subtle bourbon. The palate is sweet and syrupy. A let down.
