Around the time of the Louisiana purchase, beer was shipped in barrels. if one had been lucky enough to receive a used Bourbon barrel of Imperial Stout, this is what his/her happy taste buds would have encountered: roasty, rich, malty imperial stout with a strong dose of caramel, oak, and Bourbon character. This is the perfect beer to pair with hearty, cold weather dishes, smoked meats, and virtually any dessert.

700th Rating-750ml bottle: Pours a deep, deep brown with a recending mocha head. The nose is woody and smokey, with sublte sweet chocolate and bourbon notes peeking through. Big, chewy body is a great vehicle for the style. Sweet chocolate, cocoa, vanilla beans, caramel, marshmellows, along with firewood and tobacco. On top of all that is a great oak and bourbon note that doesn’t overwhelm. Nicely balanced and executed for what is becoming a cliche.

UPDATED: JUL 19, 2008 (July, 2008)Pours deep amber with thin tan head. The aroma is wood and vanilla first then turning alcohol booziness, burnt malts, caramel and more booze. The taste is bourbon booze with hints of wood. It then picks up notes of mild caramelized malty sweetness and vanilla before another boost from the booze takes the experience into the finish. I prefer a bit more of the base beer in the flavor than this product has. The after taste has a nice vanilla note at times.

(Nov. 2007)Courtesy jayg. Pours dark brown and not black with tan head. It has a sweet roasty aroma with some molasses and then burnt malts. The flavor is roasted malts, sweetness, hints of molasses that slowly turns vanilla toward the finish. Nice full flavor. There is just a hint of the ABV.

Bottle via trade with drmatt. Aroma of vanilla, alcohol, sweet and roasted malt and chocolate. Lots of chocolate as the beer develops. Pours dark brown with rich ruby undertones. Big khaki head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Sweet roasted malt on the tongue. Vanilla and burnt brown sugar. Wood. Rich dark chocolate notes emerge as the beer opens. Creamy, rich, medium to full bodied. A good beer for sure, but just lacks a little something to put it over the edge.

Bottle from Secret Santa of Summer 2007 (tjthresh). Black with a thin floe of off-white head rotating in the middle of the glass. Aroma has a strong helping of bourbon and oak in equal measure, which I like. There wasn’t too much of a sharp alcoholic note either. Creamy palate, a bit light for a strong brew. A ton of oak in the taste, the bourbon and alcohol kind of come out in the finish, after the brew warms a bit. A well-balanced BB IS.

Courtesy jayg. Thanks Jay! Pours black, with an off white head. Smells of pretty big chocolate, with the bourbon definitely being noticeable as well. Dark malts and alcohol rounded out the nose. Theflavor was big on chocolate as well, but the bourbon really came forth and showed face in the taste. Some caramel and dark malt presence were there to give the flavor some creamy notes to it. I really enjoyed this, seems to be balanced well between the bourbon and chocolate. Nothing too over the top. Solid.

Bottle at the Brickskeller. Pours somewhat thinly to a basic black, showing brandy coloring on the sides and beneath. Aroma begins with bourbon, mint, and charred oak, eventually revealing wet mulch and tobacco leaves, and steamed vegetables; broccoli. Fairly firm sweetness to taste; belgian chocolate, burnt espresso, with thin and somewhat acrid bourbon providing a dirty soil underneath. Thick maple smoke and a lovely chord of vanilla ring out in the first stage of finish; this develops a touch of plastic and increasing synthetic bitterness. Honey and ground dark roast define its damning banal simplicity at the finish. Sticky, warm, plain, and dry. Bourbon overpowers in the final pulse, drying out vegetally. Strange example; the alcohol is nicely masked despite the comparitive thinness of body, and this one could maybe do well with a little more time.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2007 Tampa RB Gathering Beer #14....not quite sure who shared this one, maybe DragonStout, maybe someone else...was hard to tell at this point in the evening....dark brown, almost black pour with a mocha colored, small-medium sized head....notes of chocolate, malts, bourbon, charred malts and vanilla on the nose....flavor very complimentary, the bourbon doesn’t overwhelm or detract much from the beer, granted I have never had the original to compare....some earthiness definitely comes through in the flavor profile, along with richly concentrated milk chocolate and bourbon notes....full bodied, silky smooth palate....bit of heat on the whole, but not too bad....finish is chocolate, bourbon and vanilla, leaving me wanting more....good beer
