Thanks, Mike and Abbie! Nice to try another from Schlafly for sure. This is last year’s batch, so it’s less dry and roasty than it should be when consumed fresh. But it’s still a solid brew, with a hefty and well-carbonated body, a pleasantly mellowed chocolate nose. Mouthfeel a little thin, and this tends to accentuate the now papery flavors. But the choc is nice, and there’s just enough roasts still remaining.

Deep mahogany with a quickly fading tan crown. Aroma of caramel, toffee, nuts and mild chocolate. Taste of black licorice, anise, light chocolate, salt and over-roasted malt.

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a small but dense tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, some chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, low sweetness and bitterness. Nice, rich maltiness. Solid black lager.

Aroma has light roastiness, a little chocolate, apple and red grape. Appearance is dark ruby brown with bone head. Flavor has some of the light roast, but with a pleasant fruit backbone; there’s a little chocolate in there, too, but not too much. Palate is very bubbly. A really well made Schwarzbier from one of the most consistent breweries, IMO.

Clear dark amber with a light ring head and spiderweb lacing. The taste is a roasted caramel malt that leaves an oily coating on the tongue and roof of the mouth. There is a bitter toffee in a short-lived finish. The possibilities are far greater than the payoff, but hey...its only 5% abv.

12 ounce bottle, bottled on 12/9/2011. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a mahogany brown color with about a half inch off-white head. Both the head retention and lacing are decent enough. The brew smells like roasted and bready malt, coffee, nuts and some chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s the addition of some caramel and a bit of an earthy flavor. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it’s a bit creamy and goes down easy. I think it’s a solid brew overall. I’d buy this one again, hopefully a fresher bottle next time around. Still, even now it’s worth a try at $1.75 for a single bottle. Purchased at Party Town, Florence, KY.

Aroma is malts and grains, with a hint of grit. The flavor is malty, also having an undertone of caramel and coffee and a slight grittiness. Decent black lager, could of done without the grittiness though.

Average carbonation. Malt, roast, nut, chocolate, light hop, slight caramel finish is dry.

Bottle- Pours a very deep mahogany color with a nice tan head that fades slowly to lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, some nuts, and a bit of chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt and some nuttiness with a bit of chocolate sweetness. A nice bitterness throughout and a dry finish. Fairly medium body, smooth with a somewhat creamy texture. Very nice balance. Very enjoyable offering. Not an overpowering beer, but still a beer with lots of character compared to other of this style I have tried. Well worth checking out.
