3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft. Poured clear dark brown color with a moderate frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy smoked malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy smoked sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good smoked brew.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sample at the brewpub. This homage to the Alaskan benchmark pours a mostly clear dark brown color with some ruby around the edges. Thin sheet of lacing on the glass. The aroma is smoky with touches of roasted malt and chocolate. Medium body with a smoked character that never becomes overbearing, as seems to be an issue with some beers of the style. Flavors of malt, chocolate and nuts are present. The finish is smoky with roasted malt lingering. Pretty good overall.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled on tap at the 2010 Indiana Winterfest. Poured dark brown with a brown head. Aroma had strong roasted malt flavor with an undertone of smokiness. Flavor was more smokey and balanced a bit with the roasted malts.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft sample at Hop in the City 2010. Pours a cloudy brown with ruby tints and a small beige head. Aroma of smoked hickory, roasted barley malts, chocolate, pepper, and earth. Flavor of hickory-smoked pork, roasted barley malts, toasted brown sugar, light pepper, chocolate malts, and peat. Medium-bodied, with a smoky mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Some of the people I came with thought this was too smoky, but I thought it was fairly dialed down. The palate has a lot of incongruent notes going on, but there are a lot of interesting flavors. I’d like to see this again on tap or in bottles sometime soon.

3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the Taproom, 2/18/06: Opaque and black with an off-white head. Little aroma and very little "rauch" to back up the title ... But this is actually a delicious, drinkable porter and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Enjoyed at the Tap Room. Very dark with a bit of red. Nice creamy tan head that lasted nicely and left a layer of lace. Pleasant and interesting aroma was smoke, coffee, peat, roasted nuts. Flavor is exactly as the aroma. Very nice and tasty. Understated. Well done.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
This rating was from the Hop In The City event where brews from the previous year were sampled (5 oz) by the attendees from kegs. This brew poured a medium sized head of fine to large sized light brown colored mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a opaque brown colored body with no visible carbonation. It had a nice malty caramel aroma and a fair mouthfeel, but the smoked coffee flavor seemed a bit off.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hmmmm, interesting to see the rating below mine was a bottle from trade even though this is tap only and hasn’t been on tap for about two years. So it goes.
The 2008 version pours very dark with a dense tan head. There is some roasted malt with noticeable chocolate and some smokiness that has only a hint of the rauch-like (meaty) traits. Medium clean body that is smooth with unobtrusive sharp carbonation on the finish. The flavor starts with creamy roasted malt, milk chocolate and a light amount of smoke that has none of the rauch traits.... thank goodness. The finish has a bit of spice with more smoke and a coffee bitterness. Overall this is quite a good beer and it seems a lot better than the last times I experienced it.
